Your MTB prodigy already has a killer mountain bike. But what about that seat post? If you’re like us, you couldn’t live without a dropper post. It’s only fair that your kid gets one too, right? Thanks to PNW, there’s a new option for kid’s mountain bikes that’s actually built with little riders in mind…

PNW Fern kids dropper post

Just like kid’s suspension, a kid-specific dropper post needs to work for lighter riders. You might be able to slap a standard dropper post on a kids bike, but the seals and air spring tuned for heavier riders may make it harder for your young one to operate. That’s why the PNW Fern has a light weight sealed cartridge meant for riders between 44 and 110lbs. It’s important to note that those weights are the minimum and maximum supported weights of the post.

PNW Fern kid's dropper post sizing

In terms of size, the post is only offered in 27.2mm diameter with a 90mm travel. The chart above should help you figure out if it will fit your kid’s bike.

PNW Fern kid's dropper post external routing

Since most kid’s bikes probably won’t have internal dropper post routing, PNW has gone with an external routing design for the Fern. The post doesn’t include a lever, but it’s compatible with all PNW levers and “most levers from other brands”. The 7075 aluminum post has a claimed weight of 506g.

Priced at $199.99, the post includes the same great Lifetime Warranty as other PNW products.

This is nice. Besides the normal use case, kids also benefit from being able to drop their seat when slowly to stop. Many kids on smaller bikes won’t be able to touch the ground when their seat is adjusted for proper pedaling biomechanics due to physical limitations of BB drop and crank length. So kids tend to run lower seats. This could help mitigate that if coordination is high enough.
