Already seeing signs of cooler weather? Then it might be time to take stock of your current shoulder season gear – meant for that time of the year when it’s too warm for your deep winter kit, but still cold (and wet) enough to warrant some heavier layers. To celebrate the upcoming fall colors, 45NRTH has just dropped a new collection of transition pieces perfect for fall, spring, or any time you experience mild temperatures. n

Starting at the bottom, the new Ragnarök shoe/boot (shoot?) is a sleek shoe for cold and wet weather. The shoe is built with a microfiber upper that is also reflective which is placed over a protective membrane that offers wind and water protection. 45NRTH points out that this shoe is not water proof, but it is highly water resistant. They recommend covering the neoprene ankle with water proof rain pants in the wettest conditions to keep water from entering through the top.

A single Boa IP1 reel is mounted on the side for easy adjustment, and the ankle has velcro to keep tight around your leg.

Below, a real rubber outsole with anti-slip microglass squares helps keep traction on slippery surfaces, and a fiberglass injected nylon midsole provides pedaling thrust.

As mentioned, the shoe really lights up when hit by outside light sources, while the Tec Tuff toe and heel reinforcements stay dark. Offered in men’s wide 36-50 in full sizes only, the shoes include a temperature rating of 25°F and above.

For the body, 45NRTH has two new pieces in the Torvald line. One is a super light jacket which includes a nylon base fabric with a highly breathable stretch knit sid and underarm panels. The tightly woven main panels offer weather resistance which should make this a good option for days that the weather can’t make up its mind.

Available in black or citron, the jacket has a zippered rear pocket that doubles as a stash pocket for the jacket itself. Finally, an asymmetric zipper with a shaped collar is designed to prevent chin irritation.

The Torvald is also available in a vest which has all the same features, just without sleeves.

Risør merino glove liners and the Stavanger merino cap finish off the collection. The gloves are meant either as a liner for Sturmfist gloves or pogies, or as stand alone gloves in mild conditions. Made from a double face merino blend fabric, the merino ends up against your skin while the polyester stays outside for durability. Synthetic suede panes on the palm help improve grip.

The cap is a 100% merino wool built that is curved and fitted to tuck under your helmet. It comes in two sizes S/M, and L/XL to offer a better fit on more riders.

Is the boot compatible with 3 bolt cleats? It’s a shame but I can’t find any decently wide winter boots that aren’t 2bolt. I use shimano road pedals and our weather here varies greatly so some winter days I’m totally fine with just toe covers then other days it’s frigid. Normally I’d just slap some mtb pedals on my bike for winter but I have a pretty significant leg length discrepancy that manifests its self as hamstring cramps on long road rides without clear stackers

Lake makes some road winter boots that are wider

Thank you for the suggestion, Zach If I recall you tested those lakes. I’ve had lakes in the past and was really disappointed with their build quality even though they fit my American feet beautifully. Any idea if their winter boots hold up?

Try a pair of Northwave EXTREME RR GTX.
I usually wear wide version of Shimano road shoes, and these fit as wide as the Shimano shoes.
I have a pair of MTB version and a pair of road version and I like them.
Having said that, my feet would get cold below 20 degrees after awhile, even though they claim that it’s good down to -15.

So are the uppers and lowers waterproof but not the neoprene?

Nope, recessed sole will prevent that…
45Nrth used to have a road version(3 hole) of their (now discontinued) Fasterkatt winter shoe, but my experience (and obviously 45Nrth, too) is the 3 hole version does not sell the numbers that the SPD version does

Check out Northwave EXTREME RR GTX… 3 hole & their fit is on the wide side

Thanks. I have a pair of north wave nirvana’s and they fit like a glove I figured like most euro brands they’d fit their road shoes narrow. Surprised no one offers a 3 bolt winter shoe in a wide size.
