Eugene, Oregon-based wheel manufacturer Astral Cycling is releasing a new, revised version of its popular Wanderlust wheelset. The Wanderlust is Astral’s best-selling, house-made alloy wheelset. As the brand’s OG go-to, do-it-all gravel wheelset, the Wanderlust is known for its versatility and reliability.

From the inception of Astral Cycling, the Wanderlust was our best-selling wheelset.” Says Sales Manager, Loren Mason-Gere. “As tire sizes and internal rim widths have increased, the gravel and adventure use-case has increasingly slid toward the Outback, while the Wanderlust became the all-road option. The newest iteration leans into that transition with a wider rim and deeper profile, made for go-fast on and off-road applications.

What’s New?

The third-generation Wanderlust sports an increased width, moving from 22mm to 24mm. The revised wheels have a new semi-aero profile with a depth of 30mm.

Along with the custom options that are available, there will be three stock builds offered. The costs of the stock options will range between $699 and $1,199. Stand-alone hoops are available as well, and will retail for $149.

I’m a fan of alloy wheels (still) but I don’t understand the value prop here. Seems too expensive in comparison to either alloy or carbon competitors.

The White Industry hubs jack the price up. $799 for the house-brand hubset (which still may be a little bit pricy, but it probably is quality).

What’s the weight difference between the old and new rims? And I agree with Evan, these are expensive for what they are: you really have to value American manufacturing for them to make sense. That said, I have two pairs (650b & 700c) of their aluminum-rimmed wheels with White hubs and they are really good wheels.

Per the Astral website, the Wanderlust gen 2 700c rim weighs 435g, and the Wanderlust gen 3 700c rim weighs 465g.

I have a set of their Serpentine MTB wheels and I’ve been really impressed with them and Astral as a company. They have service parts in stock ( down to pawl springs). This to me helps to justify the cost delta to other (cheaper) options that are unlikely to have a robust aftercare program. And I do rate supporting US manufacturers highly.
