Photo submitted by Chad Lacher, “Rapha had their longest day Strava challenge a few weeks back on the solstice. My buddy Eric and I went socially distant in the blue mound ‘driftless‘ region of Wisconsin looking for some hills, adventure, and solitude to qualify for the virtual event. This picture is one of the earlier climbs in the morning shortly after we got caught in one of two rain showers for the day.”

What is that surface? Is it gravel or does Wisconsin do some sort of very exposed aggregate on their asphalt?

Likely Wisconsin chipseal. There really isn’t a ton of gravel in Wisconsin compared to neighboring Iowa and Minnesota.
