The Bontrager Aeolus RSL line introduced their impressively light road wheels a couple months ago, and now that weight-saving rim design has made it’s way to gravel and cyclocross. Available in tubeless clincher and tubular, the Aeolus 37v gets a wider profile to match the wider tires, but keeps its 37mm rim depth.

The idea is to better support the wider tires we’re all running on dirt roads and gravel riding adventures. The TLR clincher rims are designed specifically for 35-50mm gravel tires, but can handle 28-32mm road tires just fine, too.

They also keep the lightweight build, lacing 24 spokes per wheel to a set of custom hubs with DT Swiss 240 internals. This means DT’s latest Ratchet EXP drive ring system, plus Aerolite bladed spokes.

They’re tubeless compatible, and disc brake only. The key difference is the width. The RSL 37V jumps to a 25mm internal width, up from 21mm on the road wheels. External width is 31mm, and they keep a hooked bead for maximum tire compatibility.

So, weights… the clinchers are 1,355g for the pair. That’s just 30g heavier than the road version. Considering they’re built with the same hubs and spokes, that means the extra width here only adds about 15g per rim.

What about the Aeolus RSL Tubular rims?

Realistically, the tubulars were designed with cyclocross in mind. Their recommended tire width range is 28-33mm. That’s because the rim has a 28.4mm width (at its widest point) with a rim bed width of 21.3mm and a radius of 28mm. That’s a wider bed and larger radius than the road wheels, designed specifically to match the shape of an inflated tubular cyclocross tire. Claimed weight for the Tubulars is 1,250g for the pair.

Pricing & other specs

Like the rest of Bontrager’s wheels, they come with their TLR rigid, pop-in rim strips that make tubeless setup super easy, and tubeless valve stems are included. They also send along regular rim strips in case you want to use tubes, or you can use 27-29mm tubeless tape and set them up tubeless the old fashioned (and lightest) way.

The other bits you need to know are:

  • 12×100 front thru axle, 12×142 rear thru axle
  • Centerlock disc brake format
  • 10/11 speed Shimano/SRAM freehub body (XD-R 12-speed available separately)
  • RSL 37V TLR Disc Clincher price: $2,400
  • RSL 37 Tubular Disc: $1,149.99 – $1,249.99
  • Front: $1,149 / Rear: $1,249
  • Carbon Care Lifetime Warranty for original owner

They’re available now through Trek dealers and online…here are the landing pages for the Clincher and the Tubular.

that rear hub looks super sexy, although not sure about the durability of the aluminum when you machine the bend so sharp

Light bicycle or Nextie or Farsports for the win. Very Similar spec for $1500 less and better hub and spoke choices.

@candle39road: I swear to God I am SO done with Zipp hubs. Never again. I’ll take DT Swiss hub internals any day of the week.

China brands can’t match Zipp’s spec @ 1352g/40mm deep/25 internal + Lifetime warranty.

Not sure holding Zipp up as the high bar makes any sense. Lifetime warranties are not indicative of a great product, more often than not warranties like this is basically marketing to give the impression of quality. Sadly Zipp has also had some horrendous recalls over the years. They definitely need that lifetime warranty due to soft carbon rated to 90kgf max. I recently cracked the sidewall of a warrantied 303 with my thumb without even trying too hard.

I’m just comparing Specs of current offerings of similar wheels from different brands and Zipp seems to have the best on paper. I’ve had bad anecdotal experience with Bontrager paired spoke wheels from 10 years ago busting spokes constantly as well. But, that wouldn’t prevent me from buying these completely different wheels. The fact that I can get a wheelset that is equal or better than this one in every comparable way for $500 less would though.

I have really liked the Specialized Terras for gravel. Pretty expensive, but best in class weight at 1280g, with the new ratchet hubs and 25mm internal width. They have felt very sturdy on pretty intense trails.

So there are road/21mm internal-width Aeolus RSL 37 wheels at $2400 with DT Swiss 240/Ratchet EXP hubs with 36-point engagement at 1325g, and also Aeolus Pro 37 wheels at $1300 with DT Swiss 350 hubs with 18-point engagement at 1505g.

If these are wider gravel/25mm internal-width Aeolus RSL 37v wheels at $2400 with DT Swiss 240/Ratchet EXP hubs with 36-point engagement at 1355g, shouldn’t there also be Aeolus Pro 37v wheels announced soon at $1300 with DT Swiss 350 hubs with 18-point engagement at 1535g?

Because that’s what I’m looking for.

Trek has had the wheel you are describing for over a year. Bontrager Aeolus Pro 3V. 25mm internal width, 32mm outer, depth is ~35mm, rapid drive 108 hubs (which I think is 54 points of engagement), my set came in at 1553g. MRSP $1300

Rapid Drive 108 hubs have 108 points of engagement (six alternating pawls on 54 teeth).

These wheels are made from components made and sourced in USA and Switzerland. They also have a lifetime warranty and offer a better loyalty program so if you break the wheel in your 1st two years, for any reason, it is replaced at no charge. After that, the program reverts to something more similar to Zipp’s, a discounted repair/replacement if you destroy a wheel outside of warranty conditions.
