BOYD Cycling just pulled the covers off its newest all-around carbon road wheelset, and it’s one of the lightest it’s produced. Meet the all-new Podium 36 Road Disc SL. On paper, the new wheelset hits a sweet spot for many riders, not just the weight-weenie crowd.

At 1130g for the pair, BOYD is pitching the Podium 36 SL as a true “N+1 killer”. We’re seeing many other companies offering similar options: a wheel that can handle most rides and supports larger tire sizes. With a 36mm rim depth and 24mm internal width, it’s modern enough and will support today’s 28–38mm tire sweet spot

Modern Rim Design – Modern Tire Fit

The Podium 36 SL runs a 29mm external / 24mm internal rim profile, giving tires a more rounded shape, better sidewall support, and lower rolling resistance with modern tubeless setups. The 36mm depth should feel stable in heavy winds, spin up quickly when needed, and cover rough ground without the harsh ride of a deep rim.

BOYD says the rim is optimized for 28–38mm tires, making it just as at home on aero road rubber as on endurance-oriented or all-road tires. The rims are hooked, not hookless, which keeps compatibility broad and pressures flexible, a big plus for riders not sold on hookless but want a modern rim.

The new rim features a 0.7mm micro-hook that enables BOYD to reduce weight without compromising tire security. Boyd claims this feature keeps the wheelset compliant with current tire safety standards too.

Light – Not Fragile

At a claimed 515g front and 615g rear, the Podium 36 SL is one of the brand’s lightest wheelsets ever, but BOYD says durability hasn’t been sacrificed to get there.

The rims use high-modulus carbon laid at strategic cross-angles, reinforced spoke beds, and an 72/28 fiber-to-resin ratio. BOYD also uses over 210 PSI of molding pressure during manufacturing to minimize voids and inconsistencies.

In high-stress zones, BOYD adds T1000 carbon fiber, enabling the rims to exceed 110 joules of impact resistance, more than 2.5× the UCI minimum. That’s a good test for riders who want one fast wheelset they can actually train on, not just race.

Grade 54 Hubs & Engagement

The wheels roll on BOYD’s Grade 54 straight-pull ratchet hubs, delivering 6.6° of engagement for quick, instant power transfer.

Internally, they are spun on Enduro ABEC-5 bearings, and the wheels are laced 24h front and rear with Pillar Wing 20 aero spokes and Alpina ABT locking alloy nipples, all built 2-cross for long-term reliability.

What kind of tubeless danger? Thousands of tubeless wheels rolling fine as we speak, no issues. Use tubeless ready tires and stay below the specified max. tire pressure and there is no problem at all, only enjoyment
