Leading up to his return to the Octagon, notorious MMA fighter Connor McGregor needed a change. Actually, it was really his knees that needed a change after ACL surgery meant that running was out of the question for a while. On the advice of the McGregor F.A.S.T. trainers (who are all ex-cyclists), Connor decided to add cycling into his training program.

Coincidentally, FiftyOne Bikes is just around the corner from Connor’s SBG gym in Dublin. The final link from the Irish fighter to the Irish custom bike maker was made by his doctor and former National Road Race champion, Dr. Julian Dalby. The result is another gorgeous build from FiftyOne with a number of custom touches fit for the former champ.

If there was any doubt to whose bike this was, you probably haven’t seen the paint. McGregor & Notorious checker parts of the bike with select gold leaf accents.

It doesn’t look like McGregor has taken up clipless yet – either that or his custom CrankBrothers flats are just for show.

Finished with Zipp components and a SRAM Red eTap group, even if you don’t care for the MMA fighter, it’s still a gorgeous bike. McGregor makes his return to the octagon today as he takes on Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229.

I want him on our next group ride, when the rolling coal pick truck blows by, and we meet up at the next stop light. We’ll see what happens next.

He’d probably offer him a beer at the nearest watering hole and tell the hillbilly redneck hick how awesome his truck is (and offer him front-row tix with a VIP pass at his next fight).

Feel sorry for the motorist who gets angry at him and then gets caught at the next stop light…

Is this the same bike we saw at NAHBS (featured on this site) last winter? Or did Fiftyone make him a new one? In that coverage it said he really rides flats…I guess because he’s Connor Mcgregor.

I think it is maybe it was on cycling tips the reason for the flats was a heel/ankle injury I believe and concerns about being locked into a position causing more stress.

I call bs no one that actually rides their bicycles has shoes and socks that pristinley white. Such crisp sock whiteness would instantly trigger a deluge of white sock and shoe ruining rain even in the Saharan desert.

The gold accents are nice, but the overall paint job might be a little over the top. Seeing flats on a high-end road bike is a bit weird but unless you’re racing or riding really long distances there’s not much to be gained with clipless (I know, unpopular idea).

This guy is a joke. Sorry to say, but just looking at the picture in the article … I can only laugh and think that it fulfills all sorts of cliche – it virtually screams “my brain is gone and with my fist I will punch that bike … do not ask me why”. I’m glad that evolution moved one and this kind of guy reflects the inferior level of human kind in these days.

Heck of a broad statement. His sport of preference is not a far cry from even some higher level Crit races for the chances of blood and suffering. It is more his behavior “out of the ring” in places like Vegas that have given him his reputation. Nothing at all inferior about boxing, or what ever the cage fights are called today. To insult their intellect reflects directly on suppositions that only weak minded folks tend to have (or, you live in California).

So you think it is respectable if a person says “for my love to (cage) fight and for the love to WAR I’m coming back”? This person is anything but a good ambassador for cycling (sport). Kids should not look up to such a person.

Oh, the irony replete in calling out people as “weak minded folks” while at the same time insulting someone based on where they might live.

Pot, meet kettle.

It bothers me that McGregor gets all this cycling spotlight, when he’s essentially ripped his entire career straight from the Diaz brothers, especially Nate Diaz. Nate is a prolific cyclist and all-around athlete, in fact, when he decisively beat McGregor in their first fight, he was training for an Iron Man, not an MMA fight. McGregor is a hack. Nate Diaz is the real deal, and needs more attention on cycling websites.

This thread needs to stop. None of you have ever stepped into a ring at that level. YOU NEVER WILL. If so you WOULD be killed if given the chance. Shut your mouth and end your arm chair sportscaster comments from your laptop because its safe for you. Ride your bike. Enjoy the MMA show and a great looking bicycle ridden by a champion in his sport.

Why should smart people step into a ring? In these days its inevitable that brain is the strongest weapon ever developed, otherwise you would still live on trees.
