The National Bike Summit was held this year in DC. Activists lobbied, discussed and brought the voice of cycling to the US House and Senate. US Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood rallied the cyclists in attendance and urged them to ride on Capitol Hill. The current transportation bill expires on March 31st. A new bill must be passed or the current bill must be extended. It’s argued that the current bill provides weak funds for cycling and walking infrastructure. Due to the attendance of cyclists and the hard work and timing of the National Bike Summit, changes may ensue for higher funding of cycling friendly transportation infrastructure.
Opening with the first Women Cycling Forum on Tuesday, March 20, the event ended on Friday the 23rd with a National Summit Bike Ride on Capitol Hill. The National Bike Summit Program is located here and a link to what the US Secretary of Transportation spoke on is here at BikeBiz.

World Bicycle Relief, an organization founded by SRAM, has now distributed over 100,000 bikes worldwide. Founded after the tsunami in 2004 to aid victims in Sri Lanka, the organization has since provided needed transportation throughout Africa and Asia.
