The preppers among us like to be ready for anything, but the cyclist in all of us wants to minimize weight. While we do love a good Silky Saw and a good multitool, the Leatherman TTi strikes a great middle ground for mountain bikers.

Using a lightweight titanium frame, it packs 19 tools into a 252g package that’s just 4″ long. Except there’s more to it than that…

Why carry a Leatherman for mountain biking?

Leatherman Charge Plus titanium multitool side profile

Well, two reasons, depending on the ride. If you’re backcountry exploring, it’s a peace-of-mind thing. You never know what might happen.

But for most of us, we’ve probably come across a small fallen tree or other trail detritus caused by a storm or something. Sometimes we can just pull them off the trail, other times they need to be sawed into smaller chunks. It’s there that a good saw blade can save the day. If this one’s too small, chances are you’d want a chainsaw anyway.

Can it do bike repairs?

Here’s where this one makes sense for cyclists – the bit holder.

The Charge+ TTI comes with 15 non-metric bits, but you’ll want to add your own set of metric bits and a Torx 20 & 25 to the mix. You’re giving up a chain breaker, but there are tire-lever multitools that pick up the slack in that department.

Here’s the full list of it’s tools:

Needlenose Pliers
Regular Pliers
Premium Replaceable Wire / Hard-Wire Cutters
Electrical Crimper
Wire Stripper
S30V Knife
420HC Serrated Knife
Saw
Spring-action Scissors
Cutting Hook
Ruler
Can Opener
Bottle Opener
Wood/Metal File
Diamond-coated File
Large Bit Driver
Small Bit Driver
Medium Screwdriver

INCLUDED BITS:
Square Drive #1 & #2
Eyeglass Screwdriver
Hex 5/32 & 9/64″
Hex 1/8″ & 7/64″
Hex 3/32″ & 5/64″
Hex 1/16″ & .050″
Phillips #1-2 & 3/16″ Screwdriver
Screwdriver 1/8″ & Torx #15

Retail is $169.95, available at Leatherman.com. They also have a Bit Set and Bit Extender, sold separately, in case you don’t already have your own.

Worst combo bike tool ever. Correction, its titanium, second worst. Enjoy replacing all the hardware you strip with this.

It’s = it is. No exceptions.

@Cheese…um except for ‘it has’ right? Like how Tyler used it…which was correct.

No. Cheese is correct, and the way it appears in the article is wrong. You wouldn’t say “Here’s the full list of it has tools”. The sentence is possessive. It owns the tools. “Here’s the full list of its tools” is correct.

You’re right, Luggednut, it has is also correct. Tyler is wrong, though. It’s is never possessive.

I’ll keep using my 144g Skeletool CX. With the exception of the saw (near-useless on a multi-tool); it has the basics covered with the bit carrier, blade, and pliers/cutter. Someone posit me a situation on a trail that would be best handled by that tiny saw… change my mind.

$169.95? i can get a better multi-tool for the bike, a decent knife and a Vaughan 9TPI Bear Saw (which weighs about the same as a Silky but cuts larger diameter trees/brush) for a fraction of that.

I use leatherman tools for 15 years, both in private an pro life when I was operating in the desert or offshore… they saved my day in Multiple occasions… but the Ti tools are crap. Their structure is made of multiple separate pieces (over single piece inox structure) way flexier than the Wave for example… now for bike riding none of their tool does a better job than normal multi tool

Of course, millions of people have a deep and primal desire for swiss-army-knife type gadgets. I can understand that. But if your ride needs three different small knives, a file, a saw, a fish-hook remover, and a tool for removing stones from horses’ hooves, it’s a very different ride to what everybody else is doing.

Do you *really* need to carry a saw in case a tree has fallen across your path? If the tree is too big to climb over, and too heavy to drag aside, and too solid to stomp with a good hard SPD, the “saw” in a compact multitool isn’t going to help much.

Apart from very bike-specific tools like tyre levers and chain breakers, if you need a “multipurpose” tool on a ride it will almost certainly be a screwdriver, hex bit, or Torx bit. Not an electrical crimper or a tiny pair of impractical scissors. Just get all the quarter-inch hex bits that your bike needs (about 5 or 10 grammes), and a quarter-inch hex wrench, and you’ve won; this is also lighter than carrying the swiss-army-knife type solution (hooray for gramshaving) and it *will* be easier to fix whichever cleat or limit-screw starts working loose on your ride.

Ironically, Leatherman already sell a different tool with locking pliers which are a fine portable replacement for a socket set just in case you need to adjust a bolt. They’re really versatile for general-purpose pinching, tugging, twisting, and pulling. But they’re not sexy titanium (and, to be honest, despite the extra versatility I haven’t yet needed one on a ride).

I just picked up an old leatherman wave off of ebay for 50 bucks and it has all these features, I also I have survived 10 years without needing a leatherman while out on a ride. It’s gonna be a hard pass.

this is the multi tool for the guy that has the bike shop change his tubes and adjust his seat cause it is just a skosh too high.

the fact that this has SAE sized bits is also laughable

No metric bits = useless for trail side repair. I’ll stick with my hex key set, leatherman squirt and chain tool.

Its not about whining about an uneeded product… Its the fact that we as cyclists keep having to see/learn/read about this junk. The publishers of these articles should be more discerning and hopefully jokers will think twice before creating products that are unnecessary… and the naive consumer should read the comments to get second opinions before they shell out mega bucks for crap!

but,…. YOU in fact DON’T HAVE to read about it and such things, nor hear about it, and you barely have to see it either.

So yeah… whining.

So many ppl these days working so hard to find their way to victimville.. No one but you is forcing you to read, hear, acknowledge things you don’t appreciate.

i cant help but think this is just an ads and they dont actually care one bit if its really useful – all they want is you to click the affiliate link at this point. theres a bunch of these every time i visit this site. it used to be a fun site to look at for new stuff. now its just a money machine hoping to trick random visitors.

Also yeah the leatherman is a really cool multi, but no, its a terrible idea to carry on a bike, useless and heavy (yes even in titanium)

Do you know how easy it is to go on a mountain bike ride with a multitool that has a saw and never think once about how much it weighs or if you will ever actually use it?
