bicycle chain bowl recycled bike parts holiday christmas gifts for your environmentally minded cyclist

Sustainable Travel International has released its 4th Annual Green Gear & Gift Guide just in time for the holiday season. It lists not just the brands that use sustainable “ingredients”, but a little about each of the companies.  For instance, this Bike Chain Bowl from Resource Revival…all of the energy used to make their stuff is from renewable sources and the bike parts are recycled.

From their press release: “The number of consumers purchasing fair trade goods has significantly increased over the past few years.  According to the Fair Trade Labeling Organization, consumers worldwide spent US$3.62 billion on Fair Trade Certified Products in 2007. This is a 47 percent increase over 2006, directly benefiting more than 1.4 million producers and workers worldwide. Outdoor equipment and clothing is also very popular.  In 2006, the Outdoor Industry Association reported that US$289 billion was generated annually in outdoor recreation retail sales and services across the U.S. alone.”

“Fortunately, we don’t have to compromise our values during the holidays or to enjoy a good adventure,” explains Brian T. Mullis, president of Sustainable Travel International. “More companies than ever before are responding to consumer demand for fair trade, locally produced, and eco-friendly products.”

The year’s Green Gear & Gift Guide features a variety of green gift ideas for travelers and outdoor enthusiasts from shoes and apparel to bicycles and luggage - all of which must meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Be produced using resource efficient, recycled, renewable, and or recyclable materials;
  • Be offered by distributors that gain fair prices for the local producers of their goods; and or
  • Allow consumers to enjoy the world outside in a more eco-friendly manner.

The Green Gear & Gift Guide is available online. Companies that wish to be considered for Sustainable Travel International’s 5th Annual Green Gear & Gift Guide should contact the organization via email at info@sustainabletravel.com.
