The team at HUNT wheels is covering all the bases of performance, fresh off of a sneak peek of a super affordable set of alloy wheels. They are rolling in the other direction now, with a top-of-the-line speed and performance-focused addition to their Aerodynamicist collection.

HUNTs new wheels aim at speed, producing it, maintaining it, and controlling it — meet the 7387 Aerodynamicist Carbon Disc and 8387 Aerodynamicist Carbon Disc wheelsets.

The two aerodynamic wheelsets bring new depth and performance to the Aerodynamicist collection. They are the first in their range to feature independent front and rear rim profile designs, engineered to provide the lowest possible drag while maintaining crosswind stability.

The engineering and product development teams at HUNT Bike Wheels applied in-house computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis techniques coupled with extensive wind tunnel testing to develop three aerodynamically advanced wheels. Each wheelset combination aims at different disciplines, triathlon, time trial, and criterium riders.

Our EU Tech Editor Cory gave us a sneak peek of the rims last fall and it looks like not much has changed. There are three differing rim depths with a blunt-nosed shape, aimed at different facets of cycling.

Different front and rear rims?

The aerodynamic design approach addressed the differing aerodynamic demands of front and rear wheels as part of the whole system to deliver maximum confidence in handling and speed.

The three resulting wheel designs include two front wheel options in 73mm and 83mm depths, paired with an 87mm deep rear wheel, offering riders the choice between two distinctly different wheelset systems depending on their conditions, preferences, and goals.

The new wheelsets both roll on Hunt’s Sprint SL 7.5 Hub, with an engagement rate of 7.5°, multi-point pawls, and a 48t ratchet ring within the hub shell. The rim dimension boasts a 73mm deep (34mm ext. 20mm int.) front rim, paired with an 87mm deep (30mm ext. 20mm int) rear rim. Users can purchase standard HUNT EZO bearings or upgrade to Ceramic Speed bearings for even more speed.

HUNT has published a complete research white paper summarizing the two-year-long development, prototyping, testing, and validation of the new wheelsets.

HUNT states in their white paper, “Due to the (generally) laminar nature of airflow, an object immediately behind another object will be subjected to disordered airflow of different speeds and directions. Therefore, it must be designed to reduce drag in those disordered airflow conditions. Applying this to cycling, particularly wheels, front and rear wheels encounter different airflow conditions and therefore have unique aerodynamic roles in the system. The HUNT engineering team has purposefully designed this system’s front and rear rims for their specific role, creating an optimal combination of drag reduction, crosswind stability, and low weight.”

I wonder if these wheels will actually perform in the windtunnel. Previous wheels didn’t: https://www.hambini.com/testing-to-find-the-fastest-bicycle-wheels/

Those are 50mm and 36mm rims. How are those the previous wheels to these? How is a 4+ year old design relevant here?

I’m only giving some backstory to the brand.

Couple big differences, those 50 Carbon Aero Disc are their open mold rims. Aerodynamicist and Limitless are designed in-house. You’re essentially comparing the lowest end wheels they offer to some of the highest pedigree wheels on their spectrum offered.

I am not comparing them.

You’re literally comparing them to the wheels Hambini reviewed.
