The Islabikes Beinn bike range is a boon for parents looking to get a simple, high quality, high value bike to get their kids interested in cycling. Building up from the Beinn 20 Small for kids from 112cm/3’8″ tall, the new 650B wheeled Beinn 27 will fit bigger kids around 146cm/4’9″ or taller.

Islabikes Beinn 27 growing kid’s multi-purpose bike

Islabikes sizes all of their kid’s bikes by inseam length for a comfortable fit and pedaling efficiency to keep kids enjoying the ride – developing a next generation of cyclists. The previous Beinn range covered a minimum 47cm/18.5″ to a 74cm/29″ maximum inseam with 20-26″ wheels, generally for kids 5-10 years old. But now the new Beinn 27 adds a 68cm/27″ min – 80cm/31.5″ max inseam length range for taller, growing kids from 10 years and up.

Tech Details

Technically the Beinn 27 is the same as Islabikes’ smaller offerings with a quality aluminum frame and lightweight alloy components sized specifically for the comfort of smaller riders. And it really is just a replacement for the old Beinn 26 Large. But updating to the latest wheelsize gives the bike better fit & performance to keep new cyclists riding, while taking advantage of the largest wheels a rider can comfortably fit on.

The Beinn 27 gets a 15″ 7005 heat treated aluminum frame and 1.125″ cro-moly fork.

It gets built up with kid friendly Islabikes house brand alloy parts, including a small diameter handlebar & slim grips, short reach brake levers pulling mini V-brakes, a proportionally scaled saddle, 165mm cranks, and Islabikes’ versatile mixed-surface tire design in 27.5×1.6″ (41mm wide). Drivetrain is a SRAM X4 8-speed with a wide 11-32 cassette paired to a 32T single chainring.

Total claimed weight is 9.9kg (21.8lb) and the bike comes in a few colors depending on the market – green, red & teal. The bikes sell for $650/£440/524€. They are available for pre-order now, a few are currently available, but most are expected to ship out in June.

As with all models in the Beinn range, the new Beinn 27 is built for versatility. It can be fit with full-coverage fenders, a rear rack, and plenty of other standard accessories.

The Beinn 27 also fills a gap. Islabikes already offers an adult version of the bike called the Beinn 29 that drops the child specific components, but carries on the simple alloy construction and value-packed spec.

The Beinns are great all purpose bikes, and pretty decent value when you consider resale. We’ve been through a 20 and a 24. My only real complaint is the 1″ threadless head tube on the smaller models means you need a shim to use a longer stem, as 1″ threadless stems are really tough to find.
