Lazer introduces the Verde KinetiCore, an urban helmet made of 70% recycled product. It uses zero-glue construction and is easy to dismantle and recycle at the end of its use-life. Founded in 1919, Lazer has been “designing and creating helmets for over 100 years”, intending to contribute to a society where cyclists can enjoy riding in safety.

The new Verde KinetiCore helmet is unique and a stepping stone to a new approach to helmet design for Lazer. “We are well aware that the production of a helmet will always have an impact on the environment, but we do strive to reduce this impact. This new helmet is a step in the right direction for Lazer. Our journey on this path – will not end with Verde KinetiCore“. – Peter Duynslaeger, commercial director of Lazer.

Lazer says it’s the perfect helmet for the commuter who is not scared of different weather conditions, fully committing to their bike ride to and from work.

The helmet features clever vents that boost ventilation without letting rainwater enter. Once the temperature drops and cold wind is no longer welcome, the compatible winter kit offers increased warmth. So it seems the helmet is ready for anything.

What is Circular Design?

Circular design focuses on minimizing the environmental impact, based on reducing, reusing, and recycling materials. The Verde KinetiCore minimizes the use of materials. The new helmet uses a limited amount of components when compared to traditional helmets. For example, the new Verde KinetiCore makes no use of strap anchors, dividers, Velcro, magnets, or paint.

Made From Recycled Materials…

The new helmet is made from recycled materials whenever possible. A minimum of 70% of the Verde KinetiCore’s weight is made up of recycled materials. These materials are used in its outer, and inner shell, fit system, and straps. Ensuring that the outer shell is both recyclable and durable, the helmet’s hardshell is made from recycled CDs. Probably the only thing that old Nickleback CD of yours would be good for, eh?

…But Also Recyclable

The new Verde KinetiCore is easily recyclable and ready for a circular future. The new Lazer patented EcoLoc eliminates the need for glue during the construction of the helmet. The helmet consists of separate components made from different materials. When producing a traditional helmet, these components would be glued together, making one cohesive helmet from different materials. This process makes disassembling and recycling nearly impossible at the end of the helmet’s lifecycle.

The Verde KinetiCore consists of interlocking components by the use of EcoLoc, which is visible on the rear of the helmet. This zero-glue construction allows the user to easily disassemble the helmet at the end of its lifecycle. You would simply unlock, look for the stamps on the different materials, and sort correctly at home.

Optional Rear Light Port

The helmet also has the option of using the built-in port for the Lazer universal LED to help increase visibility. Using the port makes the light removable. Again, this allows for the complete disassembly of all waste parts as opposed to built-in batteries and LEDs.
