Old Man Mountain (OMM) just dropped the Axle Pack V2, an update to the fork-mount adapter it launched in 2024. The idea hasn’t changed. Version 2 will still give pretty much any fork Three-Pack mounts without leaning on eyelets. So that way, your fork can haul bikepacking gear whether or not the frame builder planned for it.

The new Axle Pack V2’s highlight is the lighter weight. Each side comes in at a claimed 59g. OMM says that’s 20% lighter than the Axle Pack V1. In case you were wondering, that’s roughly the weight of a candy bar per side.

That means your snack stash now weighs more than your fork mounts. But your snacks can’t hold anything; the rated capacity for the Axle Pack V2 is 10kg (22lbs) per pair.

Protect the Eyelet

This weight rating is the reason axle mounting matters. It comes down to the mounts themselves. You see, most bikes’ fork mounts are rated to around 1.5kg (3.3lbs) each, and that’s before a tree, a rock, or a questionable line choice enters the picture.

If you happen to whack a loaded bag into something solid, you’ve got a real shot at tearing eyelets out of your fork, especially if it’s a carbon fork. Anchoring the mount at the axle takes that load off the fork’s mounts and protects the fork from potential damage.

There are other perks to the new Axle Pack V2. For instance, when using clamp-style mounts, they can compress the seals on a suspension fork; plus, they tend to slip on tapered carbon legs. But when you axle mount, you sidestep both of those problems.

Hanging gear on the fork also helps balance the bike and keeps the center of gravity low and stable, which beats a high-mounted load that makes the bike feel like an inverted pendulum.
