NuVinci is shifting with the meteoric rise of e-bikes and will be rebranding their Nuvinci Cycling brand as ‘enviolo’ from the start of next year. The big shift comes as their stepless automatically shifting continuously variable transmission (CVT) hub technology seeks more penetration on the e-bike market.

Since 2007, NuVinci Cycling has already seen strong growth with a unique variable gear ratio hub being spec’ed in a number of OEM applications and built up into wheels separately by independent bike shops and riders looking for something different.

But now with commuter e-bikes looking to benefit from the same smooth CVT gear range, parent company Fallbrook is rebranding the cycling tech under a more e-bike focused name. The same tech has also been licensed under the NuVinci name for motorized vehicle markets, so the new enviolo division aims to better differentiate the bike-focused hubs. And it won’t be only e-bikes really. You will still be able to put a enviolo hub in a traditional bike if you want. The e-bike segment is just now making up the biggest share of their product sales.

With the new reorganization, enviolo also has five new drivetrain group targeting different users – for city, trekking, cargo, sportive or commercial bike & e-bike applications. The new name takes over from January 1, with model year 2019 parts making their way out to market through mid-2018.

Other than the fact that the new name begins with an “E” (and an upper case one at that), how is this a “a more e-bike focused name”? I always find it odd when I see companies putting all these resources into rebranding exercises that are of no clear benefit, and only serve to ruin their brand recognition, especially in cases like this when they are going to continue to make non “e” transmission products. If the old product has a bad rep, I guess it makes sense, like SRAM rebranding their Avid brakes, but I am aware of no such bad rep regarding Nuvinci. If you want to pump up the excitement for e-bike OEM spec, rename the “e” focused product itself, not the company, and then make a viral vid with a bunch of claims about how you are revolutionizing drivetrains, improving efficiency, and saving the planet.

What is an “Enviolo”? Is this the same thing as a “Convfefe”?

I guess it makes sense for them to target ebikes. All CVT’s have high internal friction losses. With a motor, people probably will not notice this.

They are probably changing their name because most people in Europe had a terrible time with their electronic interfaces the last few years.

We had to replace a decent amount of bikes/interfaces/hubs. Nuvinci basically kept sending out replacement interfaces, which were still defective, until the warranty periods ran out.

Ask anyone who was a pedelec dealer in Europe.

Its actually an amazing system, but the execution was terrible and Nuvinci burned their customers.
