Anodized bike parts are cool, no doubt. But, anodized silver or polished aluminum bike parts are just flat-out classy! PNW Components knows this (obviously) as they just released a limited run of anodized silver Loam and Rainier Dropper posts – and they’re only $10 more than the originals.

These are some handsome droppers, with an interesting shine. Even though this limited run is new and shiny, make no mistake, these are the same posts as the OG Loam and Rainier.

For the limited Rainier 27.2, the stanchions are hard silver ano with a bit of sandblasting. PNW says this “adds an extra boost of durability to the bling”.

The LTD Loam has a more polished look with the added option of the customizable midcap band.

According to PNW, the introduction of a silver dropper lever was more complicated than just changing the color. The stanchions typically use a coating called Hard Anodizing, or Type III Ano, which usually is only available in black and often 2-5 x thicker than more common Type II anodizing. That meant PNW had to work with their factory to not only develop a silver hard anodized finish, but a testing process to guarantee it would hold up to the abuse.

That need for testing led to a system they developed with a “container filled with mud” around the midcap and stanchion, through which they cycled the post up and down “tens of thousands of times.” In their testing with this method, Type II anodizing quickly wore through while the new silver hard ano did not.

Where have you been? it already went away in the late 80’s, early 90’s. It is making it’s way back. I’m okay with it, as well I’m okay with black or other anodized colors.

I have been in the bike industry for 25 years. I have seen colors come and go. Some I like, some I don’t like. To me, silver cheapens the look of the bike. Historically, silver components are the cheaper models. Starting with XTR M950 series in the mid-90s, gray and black became synonymous with nicer components, and silver was left for everything else.

TBH the only silver thing I’ve liked in the bike industry from the last 15 years was RockShox’s “Slippery Silver” stanchion color that they had on the Boxxer.

Black isn’t a fad. Black is a canvas.

I can’t wait for the calling everything a fad “fad” goes away! More options for bikes and bike parts is a good thing! If you don’t like silver, great loads of black and colored parts as well! I will happily ride a fixed gear bicycle with silver parts or a mountain bike with 3DV or Rasta colors. I will also happily ride any number of bikes with black parts as well bikes are just awesome and more choices is a good thing!

I for one welcome our silver overlords and want to remind them as a trusted news anchor I can help get more people to toil in the sugar mines!

I’d like the steel frame fad to spread the steel components. Steel cranks with cotter pins, steel hubs, seat posts and handlebars (as was my first bike).
