Are ceramic bearings really worth it? How much drag do bearings really produce? Does the type of grease matter? Or is it faster to use no grease at all? What about removing the seals?

In this episode, I interview Matt Harvey with Enduro Bearings, and he answers all of those questions…and a WHOLE LOT MORE!

This is one of my favorite episodes ever because there’s a lot here that surprised me, and I learned a ton about bearings. We dive so deep about materials, what really causes friction, and why some marketing claims are quite likely be too good to be true.

We also talk about how you can immediately improve the performance of any bearing on any bike, straight out of the box, even if your bike, hubs, or bottom bracket are brand new!

Get ready to take notes and set your weekend aside for tinkering!

I’m sure a company that sells ceramic bearings won’t be biased in answering if ceramic is worth it

They sell regular bearings as well. I’m not going to spend the time listening to someone tell me what I already know – ceramic bearings and faster socks are the only thing stopping me from cycling glory.

So? No one is going to say their premium product isn’t worth getting. Matt Harvey seems very knowledgeable so can still provide very useful info while not assuming he is unbiased.

Are you going to ask some expert at Zipp if an aerodynamic wheel is worth it?

It was a good podcast overall, just wish conflicts of interest were avoided.

For unbiased information on ceramic vs steel go to zero friction cycling, instructions tab, there is a document outlining differing claims.

For enduro I wld love to get xd-15 bearings, they keep banging in about them, but try to get one. They make only a handful of bb standards in xd-15, and maybe it varies by country but I have been looking for years and I just can’t get them for my bikes anytime I look and that includes pre covid. Enduro if u are going to market them, make them.

Otherwise very enjoyable and good episode
