With a limited Founder’s Edition of their lightweight carbon Posedla Joyseat featuring padding individualized to each rider, the new Czech company’s 3D-printed custom saddle is no longer just a concept. The new Joyseat combines full carbon rails, a lightweight carbon shell for either on or off-road, and custom structured TPU padding designed to perfectly fit and support each cyclist.

3D-printing’s promise of a true custom fit is now really available…

When we caught up with Posedla just last autumn, their 3D-printed custom bike saddle looked like an interesting concept, but it still seemed a bit far away from real availability. Yet now, just six months later, the Posedla Joyseat has its official release in a first limited edition run.

And it looks great, much more refined than when we last caught up with it.

How do you get a custom fit saddle?

Posedla’s customization process is based on the concept of parametric generative design.

What that means is you give them the design input data, and their generative modeling software uses adaptable algorithm programming to generate the shape of the saddle across 6 variable profile sections and then individually generate the ideal level of variable firmness & support across the four 4 main zones over the full saddle.

So where does the input data come from?

The custom Posedla Joyseat process starts with a straightforward questionnaire about what type of bike you ride, how much you ride, how long you ride, your body position on the bike, flexibility off the bike, age, gender & weight.

Once that is settled, they send you a “Smiling Butt Kit”, a specially developed Bio Foam block that you sit on to create a custom impression of your rear end, sit bone width, and weigh distribution.

Then, you simply scan the Butt Kit by taking 9 key photos of it with your smartphone according to their instructions, and send back your personalized fit data so Posedla can custom shape a Joyseat to you.

Tech details

The Posedla Joyseat saddle itself is a combination of a conventional ultralight carbon saddle and their unique 3D-printed, padded top. The 68g base is one of 4 separate carbon shells – 2 widths for road riding, 2 widths for off-road – attached to a set of  carbon 7x9mm oval rails.

The custom generated padding is 3D-printed TPU created from a powder base material with Multi-Jet Fusion technology.

Then each custom saddle to is cleaned by hand, and essentially baked in a process that gives the material its smooth, semi-gloss black look while sealing the pores of the TPU to create durable, weather & UV-resistant finish.

Lastly, the padding is bonded on top, Posedla adds your customizable logo insert, and you’ll have a custom Joyseat delivered a few days later.

The full carbon base is Posedla’s own design, and made in-house. Every step of the custom saddle production is made in the Czech Republic.

The Joyseat is a fully padded saddle and not meant to be especially ultralight. But it still comes in between 150-195g depending on individual rider parameters, making it competitively light. In fact, that’s lighter than the non-custom 3D-printed and more expensive S-Works Power Mirror we tested or newer S-Works Romin Evo Mirror. And it’s either lighter than the cheaper non-custom 3D-printed Fizik R1/R3 Adaptive or the same price as their non-custom 00 Adaptive saddles.

Posedla says they have lab tested and real-world tested the new Joyseat saddles with both amateur & pro riders in mind to ensure it is safe & built to last. It is not a gravity saddle by any means, but it is designed to stand up to almost any pedal-ly cycling disciplines, including road, gravel, and cross-country mountain biking.

Posedla’s first run of  custom-made, custom-fit Joyseat saddles is being made available in a limited Founder’s Edition of just 100 saddles – and half of them are already sold! For 399€, Posedla with make a 3D-printed saddle custom fit to you. You can even have them print your name directly in the padding and add one of 5 customizable colors at the rear logo.

The customized saddle process is available now, and takes about 5-10 weeks from hitting buy now until your first ride. That accounts for a few weeks to process your initial information, get a Smiling Butt Kit to you, then a few weeks to get the impression scans back and process them, then another couple weeks of custom manufacturing.

Current delivery estimates are mid to late July.

In the end Posedla’s new Joyseat realizes what other 3D-printed saddles had promised from the start, a truly custom saddle fit tailored to each individual cyclist.

My Fiziks adaptive is pretty firm and not quite as comfy as i had hoped for a 3D printed saddle. Not sure if the hype is real…

The specialized saddle is way comfier. I’ve had both and the fizik was way too firm. Also I’m 220 lbs and specialized power mirror is the best saddle I’ve ever ridden.

The Fizik, in my opinion, has the padding tuned incorrectly. My Fizik was soft at the back and hard at the front – not too comfy when you’re leaning forward.
The Bjorn Cycles Setka 3D printed saddle is the opposite – hard at the back for support when climbing, softer at the front to provide cushioning when you’re leaning forward. I’ve found this soooo much better for me.

Hi everyone,

just so you guys know, our approach is fully custom including custom zonal cushioning. Based on our experience and feedback from our test riders, we made the nose of Joyseat saddle softer, which you will appreciate in aggressive / aero position or when you need to move forward on your saddle. The sit bones area is usually firmer (but different for each rider based on individual parameters) to provide support exactly where you need it.

As of now, the Founder’s Edition is available within the European Union only but we are already planning worldwide shipping options in the fall of 2022.

Happy exploring,

Hi Jiri, Martin,

From the photos shown in this article, I don’t understand how the foam crush box adds any value to the custom saddle process. From what I can see, you have an imprint of the entire butt. It doesn’t seem to show or highlight the sitbones or Rami (which I figured is the primary reason for the imprint).

“Full carbon rails, lightweight carbon shell…for off-road riding” is an oxymoron. Unless they somehow cracked the code. Pun intended.

Hi Ben,

You are right, we cracked many shells and rails before we found the right formula for our design. But finally we did crack the code and made a saddle that can withstand all riding styles.

Cheers,

Isolating US market is definitely not a wise choice, there are far more people in US that are financially ready to splurge on such novel product

There are other people in the world aside from the US. Just saying….
