We’ve tested their burlier bikepacking models and really liked the upright power position over rough terrain and all-day rides. The flat bar with trigger shifters is the perfect perch for ripping about town, to school, work, or the coffee shop, made better by the ergonomic grips with built-in bar ends.
Not only is the drivetrain impervious to the elements, but the all-aluminum frame and fork will remain rust-free for ages. It even comes with pinned flat pedals, so your feet won’t slip when you have to hammer to beat that traffic light! Just need something quick, simple, and really affordable for riding around the neighborhood? The REI CTY 2.1 step-thru city bike gives you an alloy frame with SR Suntour suspension fork, reflective sidewall Kenda tires, hydraulic disc brakes, and a full Shimano 3×8 drivetrain for just $636.59!
For those on a real budget but who still appreciate the much, much better quality bicycle you can get when you don’t shop from a big-box store, there’s the REI Co-op CTY 1.1. On sale for just $466.59, it still delivers a lighter aluminum frame, disc brakes, Shimano drivetrain & puncture-resistant 700×40 Kenda tires. Even the platform pedals are aluminum, not cheap plastic ones!
Mountain Bike Deals at REI
For Mountain Bikes, we’d recommend the Ghost brand over REI’s Co-op models for most adults, and here’s why: The REI Co-op models that are on sale right now are mostly 26″ and 27.5″ models, but for many riders, you’re going to feel faster and roll over terrain easier on a larger 29er wheel. And Ghost, a quality German brand imported by REI for the North American market, has them…and they’re on sale now.
The 2020 Ghost SLAMR 2.9 29er shown above offers that “trail bike” sweet spot of 130mm travel front and rear with Rockshox suspension fork and shock, an SRAM Eagle SX 1×12 speed group, and Shimano hydraulic disc brakes. Add in Maxxis Minion 2.5″ (front) and 2.4″ (rear) tires, a dropper seatpost, Ergon saddle, and an upgrade-worthy alloy frame with Boost axle spacing, and this bike is a great platform for hitting bigger trails. On sale for $1,869.69.
For beginners, shorter riders, or large kids, the REI Co-op DRT 3.1 full suspension mountain bike puts 26″+ wheels on the XS and Small sizes, then bumps to 27.5″+ wheels for Medium and up (limited frame sizes available as of this post going live). These smaller wheels make the bike more maneuverable and usually have lower standover height. But the “+” part of that means really fat 2.8″ WTB Ranger tires, which have a TON of grip and cushion, which is great for those still getting their feet wet offroad and need an extra boost of confidence!
The XS/Small bikes get 120mm front and rear travel, and the M/L/XL bikes get 130mm rear, 140mm front travel. All use Rockshox air suspension and have a Shimano 1×10 wide range drivetrain, and comes with a dropper seatpost and hydraulic disc brakes. On sale for $1,869.09.

REI Kids’ Mountain Bike Deals
If we’re being honest, most “kids” bikes should be mountain bikes. They can ride them anywhere, the geometry and handling are forgiving yet capable, and they’re just plain fun!
The REI Co-op Rev 24 is all that and adds the stopping power of disc brakes plus the simplicity of a single chainring upfront. Also called “1x (pronounced ‘one by’), this means no front derailleur to mess with (or mess up). A twist shifter works 7 speeds in the back, a lightweight alloy frame and fork keep it manageable, and the huge 24×2.6” tires offer gobs of grip and smooth out the bumps. We also really like the ultra-low standover height, which helps more kids get on a bike with bigger wheels that’ll be faster and more stable. On sale for just $322.09, this is a heckuva deal! (There’s a 20″ wheel version, too, for younger riders)
If the only jungle your kids will be exploring on a bike is urban, the REI Co-op Rev CTY kids’ bike trades thinner tires for more speed. It keeps the alloy frame material and low standover, and there’s a step-thru version available, too, but gets rim brakes and a triple chainring setup upfront. It uses 24″ wheels and all-purpose 1.5″ wide Kenda tires. On sale for just $296.59.
Smaller rides should have even simpler bikes, and the REI Co-op Rev 20 has just one speed and one brake. Well, two if you count the coaster brake, too. This helps kids transition from stomping backward to stop to the more elegant brake lever method, but with no fear of going OTB from grabbing it too hard. It’s an alloy frame with a steel fork, and it’s on sale for just $177.59.
Simplest of all is the scoot bike, aka “balance bike”, which is proven the best way to teach your littlest rider the principles of balance and handling. We’ve helped kids as young as 2.5 years old get pedaling after riding a balance bike for a couple of months and keep passing these along to friends and family. That makes it worth the investment for a good one if you foresee helping a lot of kids get on bikes…and there are two ways to go about this.
The REI Rev 12 Kid’s Balance bike, shown above, is a pure scoot bike. It’s the lightest, simplest way to teach your kids to ride. It’s on sale for $118.09.
But, if you’re the least bit handy, we’d go for the REI Rev 12 Kid’s bike, then immediately remove (and toss!) those training wheels. Take the crankset and chain off, let them learn on it as a balance bike. Just remember to slam the saddle! Then when they’re ready, reinstall the cranks and chain and they’re off to the races! And it’s only a few bucks more, on sale now for $135.09.
