As the story goes, Skratch Labs whipped up some cookies for the crowds at Tour of California and the riders ended up pocketing some to nibble on between rice cakes. They took a look at the nutritional profiles and found the treats were at least as good as most energy bars, so why not offer them up for any ride?

Available as a kit that just requires one egg and a stick of butter to make, the mix can be tailored to fit your own tastes by mixing in fruit, nuts, chocolate chips or whatever. It’s enough to make one 9″ square pan of “bars” or a standard cookie sheet’s worth of cookies. Ingredients and more details below…

Unlike the rice cakes, these are not gluten free. And we’d like to see a non-aluminum based baking powder. Otherwise, it’s a clean ingredient list, and certainly better than the prepackaged, ready-to-bake cookie dough tubes from the grocery store. We’ll be cooking up our sample box to fuel us through the NCCX double header finals at Biltmore this coming weekend.

It’ll be available at SkratchLabs.com on January 15 and in dealers shortly thereafter. At $8.50 per box, it’s aimed at the novice cook that just wants to quickly whip something up and jump on the bike.

Looking at what you actually get, that seems like a pretty expensive box of basic ingredients. I get that it makes it simple, but that comes at a steep cost here.

Agreed that the price is a bit steep, but Biju is a great cook and I love my Feed Zone Portables so i’m willing to spend the coin and give this a try.

If these come out as delicious as their rice cakes but don’t take as much time to make I’d happily pay twice the price.

plus if you compare to what you’d pay for 18 clif bars these are a steal!

Skratch is the Apple of sports nutrition. Can’t shake the iPhone habit and made the mistake of trying Skratch drink mix, so am now paying $20 for little sacks of sugar and ground up dried fruit that probably cost $2.10 to make. Which is hard not to resent.
I realize they have low volume compared to behemoths like Gatorade and that is probably what it takes for the company to work. Lim probably making more coin than me but I’m sure is not flying a Gulfstream V around, or driving a Maserati.
The issue is I’m sure I can mix something that works just as well for $2.10, but it won’t taste as good. Like Apple, they just have it nailed and we addicts gotta pay.

big fan of Skratch drink mix. it pricey but works and doesn’t have crazy crap in it. I have used for 20-25hr ultra running races with zero stomach issues and keeps the sodium levels up. this seems like a good idea…and I’m sure these are way tastier than most wrapped bars.

Why are cyclists are so gullible and incapable? You can get this box of ingredients at Trader Joe’s for $2.99.

I love how everyone complains about how cheap it is to make these items but never considers the operational costs to produce them. Yes you can go to the store pickup your own ingredients and make cookie or drink mix but what is your time worth? Skratch is making a good product at a fair priced compared to competitors, so you can decide to support a small business or throw spend 2 bucks at larger overly profitable chains like Trader Joe’s and Wal-Mart. You may as well buy a bike while you’re frequenting them because bikes are overpriced as well.

Do people still think that eggs are bad for you? Because they’re not. Vegan is the biggest crock ever.

lol @ “overly profitable,” in the context of $8.50 cookie mix.

I’ve got a case on the way. I’ll bake up a half dozen batches with various add-ins and have a taste test with my guys. It will be a nice convenient way to make a batch of snacks.

UPDATE – The first batch of Skratch Labs cookies went into the oven yesterday. I followed the directions on the box using 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts & 1/2 cup of chocolate chips for add-ins. Not sure if chocolate chips add anything nutritionally, but they make great cookies.

I got 2 full trays of cookies ~ 3 dozen+. The cookies are solid, not crumbly, chewy or melty and should pack well into a jersey or pack for mid-ride enjoyment. (or with a cup of coffee this morning).

Overall satisfaction from the taste testers was excellent. Easy, convenient and tasty = a winner in my book
