Big hat tip to Mr. Bogdan Ioachimescu for the link on these. Info is translated in solid Ingrisch from the Japanese site Write Cycle Blog (or is it Flight Cycle? Light Cycle?), so details are a bit sparse, but we’ve pieced together what we can. Here goes:
For 2011, Mavic is introducing paired front and rear performance tires, called Yksion, in both tubular and clincher (no tubeless to be seen) versions as well as the tubes to go in them. They launched their K10 tires in March 2010, but they were paired only with the Ksyrium K10 wheelset. Now, it looks like you’ll be able to get a set for any wheels you want.
There’s a new Ksyrium SR that gets the carbon Tracomp spokes (like their R-Sys wheels) on the rear wheel, and new/revised Cosmic Carbon wheels in an 80mm depth, and others, with various sticker options including a stealth black.
UPDATE: Even more photos and wheels in this other post, too.
Check out lots of pics, taken from the Mavic Exhibition in Ariake Ameasupotsu (not sure if that translates correctly), after the break…
The Ksyrium SR wheelset looks to get Mavic’s bladed alloy spokes on the front, much like their current Ksyrium wheels.
The rear wheel gets the Tracomp carbon spokes with the same looking hub as their R-Sys SL wheelset. Claimed wheelset weight is 1445g, making it 25g lighter than the Ksyrium K10 and 40g lighter than the Ksyrium SL wheels I own. Write Cycle is reporting something about a limited run of 200 with possible availability (in Japan only?) by July 30…which means, possibly, these’ll be as hot as JDM parts on a tuner kid’s Honda if you can get ’em.
The Yksion tires look to be race oriented with Mavic’s new GripLink dual compound or PowerLink rubber and 290tpi Polycotton Kevlar casings. Clincher weights ranging from 215g to 275g and tubular weights at 290g.
Front tires appear to be a gripper compound for better steering control, while the rear tires have a firmer center compound for better power transfer and less rolling resistance. Again, this is coming from Google’s best attempts at translation, so take everything here with a grain of salt.
Their butyl tubes come in at 97g (67g?) with a 43mm Presta valve stem.
Currently only available in 40mm and 52mm tubular versions, the Cosmic Carbone looks like it’s getting an 80mm deep big brother for 2011. I’m guessing that camera sign behind the wheel probably means we shouldn’t be showing you these, but hey, they’re out there already, might as well help you find them.
White, red, yellow stickers might be available, and that all black version up above this one might be an SLR model…but they look the same other than the graphics. Wheel weight is claimed at 1750g with a full carbon rim.
WTS is likely “Wheel Tire System” since their tubulars come in at 290g. Everything else seems to add up based on the claimed weight mentioned above.
And as Google translates: Did lovely bike today?
