Machinists extraordinaire, Paul Components Engineering, have reached into the way-back machine and decided to bring back the 100% Pure Cranks. This time around, the cranks will feature an updated design with a 3-bolt direct-mount chainring spline and self-extracting crankbolts.

The Paul Comp Krëw says that it was Paul’s idea to bring these beauties back, but told the gang that he wanted to bring them back with a square taper. They were cautiously optimistic. That’s the benefit of having your name on the building: you get to do what you want.

The team started testing the prototypes and were surprised to find that they could really hone in the q-factor and chainstay clearance of their steeds. It was just as simple as swapping in the right bottom bracket spindle length, just like the good ‘ol days.

They were able to get the chainring close to the chainstay to get the right chainline in the bigger rear cog using chainring offset (0, -3, and -6).

The crank arms are CNC machined in Chico, California, using 2024 American alloy. This allows for “the removal of a lot of material for an elegant design”, while retaining optimal strength and stiffness.

These beauts are available now.

Cool, but… have you tried to find a decent square taper BB lately? Your options are <$30 junk or $250 for Phil Wood.

Um…anyone plunking down $300+ on boutique MUSA retro cranks won’t mind shelling out for White Industries or Phil Wood. One would hope.

They were never in it, they only ever showed prototypes but never made a production one.

Rene Herse sells several sizes of SKF square taper BBs for $169, which is still high compared to a basic SRAM or Shimano BB, but still $80 cheaper than the Phil Wood.

Mmm, 2024 aluminum, some fine vintage! Velvety footfeel, brilliant bouquet with coppery notes and hints of manganese, usually with a earthy to muddy finish depending on season. May want to let that age a little though.
