sram-2011-product-intro

If you’ve been following the industry calendar for any amount of time, this won’t come as news, as SRAM has used the Sea Otter Classic as a launchpad for their future products for years.  But, just to whet your appetite a bit, here’s the little announcement we got along with our media RSVP.

Yep, that X-0 indicates there’s some new mountain bike goodies ready to take center stage, and there must be something big coming because SRAM’s hosting not one, but TWO media events this year (which means two free meals for us poor starving journos! yay!).

At risk of having to eat these words along with the delicious burritos they have at their press luncheon, here’s my prognostication, which is based more on my hopes and dreams than on any inside information (of which I have none with regards to SRAM):

  • GUESS #1 – X-0 double cranksets for more affordable 2x__ drivetrain options
  • GUESS #2 – X-0 10speed cassette and shifters to create a complete 2×10 X-0 drivetrain
  • GUESS #3 – X-glide gear ratios drop down to X-0 level
  • DREAM #1 – XX twist shifter

What do you think?  What do you want to see from SRAM?  Do you think this photo after the break is real?

I bet it’s the x.o 10 speed. It’s the way to go…no one runs a big ring anymore…they just get destroyed on the rocks. Plus a 10 spd x.o would be perfect to match my hammerschmit!! But who cares about a 10spd gripshift? Uggg I hate gripshift…

Gripshift rules. I would wait to upgrade to SRAM 2×10 if I knew a gripshift option was in the works.

Ditto on the double up front – I took off my granny 9 months ago – never looked back.
been running an Ultegra 12/27 on my hardtail for last 3 years.
I wanna see side by side chart with weight comparisons!!!!!
XX vs. XO (10sp)

I’d like to see a more affordable 10sp cassette, the XX is pricey at $328 retail.

Electric shifters ? ..although, I do npt see much utility there due to needing a reliable power source

An afforadble 10 speed group to go with Hammershimdt.

IMO, SRAM’s current prices cannot be justified for their XX, X0, so you will not see the majority jumping on this bandwagaon until they show more value.

Another popular item could be a rear geared-hub that is MTB strong and light-weight. So far it has eluded the manufacturers. Shimano and Rohloff (German) have taken a stab.

I really doubt that it’s 10 speed. The picture of the rumored XO group, looks like 9 speed cassette (kind of hard to count them). And if you look at the picture that sram posted on their website of the new XG999, it kind of looks like it says XO on it.

Also XX gripshift are coming!

i would personally like to see a light, not insanely expensive 2x crank. (XX crank is to heavy!)

Talked to a sram rep last week and he confirmed the xx gripshifter.

I think the photo is real and that XO will be 9spd. Sram already made a 9spd version of the xx cassette so I don’t see why they would do that unless they intended to keep XO 9spd.

I think that it will be a 3 x 10. Reason is to keep it in reach o the “mass” market, since XO is expensive, but way less than XX. The serious rider (not racer) will opt for a granny option and the closer gear ratio. Doing a multi day stage race like the Trans Alps without a granny is not an option for 90% of riders. That is not a piece of pie that SRAM will want to lose to Shimano (who is said to be bringing out a revamped 10 speed of the XTR). But still happy to eat my words on this. O, and Gripshift rocks.

XX was released nearly two years ago. These XX grip shifters are a long time in R&D. No sign of 10sp XO grip shifter either. I say it isnt going to happen. The cable tension involved with the direct actuation is too much on the hands and wrists. I tryed a 10sp grip shifter(SEC) And cable tension was very hard to shift into 1st and 2nd. Took skin off my hand using them after a short ride!
