It may not have been defeated, but it has been improved! State Bicycle Co. has made some changes to their Undefeated Road bike for 2022, most notably using a new frame material and adding disc brakes to the build.
The existing frame geometry was retained, but SBC is now making the Undefeated Road frames from Y9 aluminum instead of 7005. They’ve also added flat-mount disc brakes, and opted for a single build option with a new pearl/tie-dye colorway.
The new Undefeated Road frames are made from double-butted Y9 Kinesium aluminum alloy, which is similar to 6061 aluminum but has a higher content of titanium. This blend improves tensile strength and hardness, so the tubing can be very thin to create a lightweight frame. Depending on frame size, complete bike weights range from 21.49 to 22.12 lbs (not including pedals).
Check out the chart above for frame geometry figures. Key frame fitments include a tapered head tube, 142x9mm QR rear axle, BB86 press fit bottom bracket, and a 31.6mm seat post. The frame offers two water bottle mounts on the down tube and seat mast, and the cables run semi-internally through the down tube.
While last year SBC offered two Undefeated Road builds at different price points, this year’s bike is available as one model only. The Tektro flat-mount mechanical disc brakes are the most significant upgrade in terms of components, but not the only noteworthy inclusion on this bike; up front you’ll find a full carbon Essor USA fork with a 12mm thru-axle.
Most of the other components are State Bicycle Co.’s own, and one nice touch is their tubeless ready wheelset with sealed bearing hubs. Shifting and cranking is handled by SBC’s 1×11 All Road 1 drivetrain, and the wheels get a pair of 700x28c Maxxis M203 Detonator tires. To keep things ergonomic for everybody, State Bicycle Co. puts longer cranks on the largest two frame sizes and stocks three handlebar widths.
The updated Undefeated Road bike comes in a new colorway; pearl with tie-dye accents. Frame sizes range from 49-62cm, and MSRP is $1499.99. A frame kit (frame, fork, headset) is also available for $699.99.
