Tioga Spyder Saddle Carbon rail (2)

Shown last year as a prototype, the Tioga Spyder Stratum will soon be hitting market. Tioga has made waves with their Spyder saddle design by replacing the padding with a flexible web-like saddle body that is said to better conform to your rear. The Stratum line introduces a proprietary dual density material to created both a flexible and durable saddle that is extremely light weight. Offered in the Spyder Stratum and Spyder Stratum Carbon, the saddles join the Twin Tail, D-Sypder, and original Sypder to fill out the line.

Sypder Stratum saddles will sit between 120 and 190g, with no word yet on pricing or final availability.

The non-carbon version of this is supposed to shred shorts. Wonder if they’ve fixed that little problem.

I’ve heard a lot of people love the original and the twin tail, citing excellent comfort despite the plastic shell but most claimed the saddles’ durability was terrible, having something like a 4-6 month lifespan. Here’s hoping they’ve improved that, cause this one looks pretty awesome and comfy with the bi-material webbing.

Along the same lines, the old Cinelli plastic saddle from the 80’s flexed a lot for comfort. It may have been marketed for BMX. It was re-issued recently, but I don’t think it is as flexy as the original.

As a kid my BMX had a saddle like this…can’t recall the brand but they were the dominant saddle of choice. Wonder how it would have stood up to a longer ride and a grown up butt

I rode the twin-tail Spyder carbon for three years and am excited for this update. I loved the old version but ditched it after going through one or two saddles per year. I’m only 135 lbs so I only broke one during riding – the rest broke in crashes. Definitely an incredible comfy saddle and I had no issues with it eating shorts (although I heard a lot of other people mention it).

My experience with the Spyder is the same as with Crank Bros. You can’t beat the weight and performance for the price they charge, but not too durable.

Tioga twin-tail spyders are super comfy and light weight. Luckily they are still usable on your commuter when the nose snaps off. Just round off the jagged edges with a file. The other place they like to break is where the rails slot into the plastic seat cover. I also had one break right across the widest part of the seat.
Please tioga, just make them more durable!

Well I will add my experience here – 152 pounds and my Twintail saddle failed in nine months. The carbon rails won’t help the Achilles heel of this design, some of the cutouts have small radius cutouts in the highest stress areas..

If Tioga REALLY wanted to fix this flawed design, they should consider reinforcing the top of the saddle with carbon or other high strength fibers. Plastic isn’t good enough!

I’ve experienced two kind of Twin Tail saddles. The first one has hard shell and is stiff enought to support body weight, as at the same time enought flexy to absorb impact from terrain. The second one, I bought an year later, is the same shape but less comfy due of excess of flexy with the risk to hit the clamp of my Alien Use seatpost….at limit of the tollerance as my weight is around 147 pounds…
