Project One is Trek’s top-of-the-line, customizable bike program. While the program allowed those willing to pay a bit extra to swap out select components on select builds, Project One gets the most attention for its custom paint program.

These custom paint offerings are only offered, however, on complete bikes. That is, until now.

Project One Frame-Only

If you are familiar with Trek’s website, you likely know how their Project One offerings worked. First, you choose one of the select Trek bikes that offers the Project One custom build option. Once you have chosen a bike, you can select the component build you would like before proceeding to the customizable paint options.

The paint tiers are Select, Signature, and ICON series, and also have options for customizing the Trek logo on the frame. Select options are no extra charge, while choosing the Signature option adds $700 to the price. Those seeking the most unique paint schemes can opt for Project One’s ICON series, which adds anywhere from $1,200 to $2,500 to the cost.

After selecting from the special paint offerings, select components can be swapped out for other options. For example, if you aren’t a fan of the handlebars, Trek may have one or two other bar options to choose from. These component options are relatively minimal and either increase or decrease the price.

These custom paint options were only available on select bikes with complete builds. Selecting the “frameset” option of a particular bike would cause the Project One “customize” button to disappear. But, not anymore. Starting today, select Trek road and gravel bikes are offered through the Project One program as frame-only options. This allows riders to get a unique Trek frame while having the freedom to choose every component on the bike rather than a select few Trek offerings.

Trek is applying the frame-only Project One offering to four of its bikes — the Madone, Domane, Checkmate, and Speed Concept. Project one is available at Trek retailers and through its website in select markets worldwide.

I ordered Project One framesets through my local independent Trek dealer between 2017 and 2021. Did they remove that option at some point only to bring it back?
