Urge’s latest mountain bike helmet is the most versatile they’ve ever made, and one of the most eco-friendly. The new Urge Gringo Matic is a lightweight full face enduro helmet, with a removable chin bar that converts into a light all-mountain half-shell. Plus, in typical Urge fashion it is cheaper and lighter than most similar helmets, and it made from 80% recycled materials.
Urge Gingo Matic convertible full face all-mountain enduro helmet
I don’t mean to seem smitten by Urge Bike Products, but pretty much every new helmet I see from them is somehow lighter, cheaper & more eco-friendly than the vast majority of the competition. Sure Urge isn’t adopting the most frontline MIPS, Koroyd, or SPIN tech, but they still are certifying protection to CSPC, AS/NZ & CE/EN standards. And the new convertible Gringo Matic lands on all of that…
Gringo Matic Tech Details
Urge makes the majority of the Gringo from recycled materials, with reducing impacts on the environment an overarching goal of the company. That means fully recycled ABS plastic for the adjustable visor & recycled EPS inside the shell for protection. (Apparently recycled EPS is as good as new materials functionally, but because of its low mass, few companies recycle it.)
Urge calls the Gringo an All-Mountain helmet and will sell it in two versions. Both share the same core construction & impact protection with the removable chin bar.
De La Sierra helmets will likely have the chinguard regularly detached for all extended climbing, so they include extra mesh chin protection for the descents. De La Pampa models are intended to be worn more with the chin guard attached, so they are more open for better ventilation. Pick which ever you prefer, even if just for the looks.
El Gringo is an open well-vented trail helmet up top with comfy Urge pads, dial rear retention, and is cut to be compatible with both sunglasses or googles. As a half shell helmet if offers low occipital protection at the base of the head and weighs 412g.
Add in the two-step, snap-on chin bar and the full face version weighs just 790g.
