Each new freehub standard poses a challenge to riders in the form of running the proper cassette. It poses a further challenge if you want to ditch your cassette in favor of a single speed. For their latest single speed conversion kit, Wheels Manufacturing is tackling the Shimano Micro-Spline freehub design with a unique solution.

Instead of making cogs that are splined to fit the actual Micro-Spline freehub, the Solo-Spline kit uses a base sleeve, called the Solo-Speed Carrier, which matches the freehub splines. The design is very similar in concept to their Solo-XD unveiled at Sea Otter ’23. Note that this means you have to run the Solo-Speed Carrier to use these cogs, you cannot just mount them to a Micro-Spline hub.

Cogs are then optimized for the splines on the outside of the Solo-Speed Carrier, and can be adjusted for chainline with the included spacers. The carrier and the cogs are machined from 7075 aluminum for durability, while the spacers are made from 6061 aluminum for a complete weight of 101g for the kit. The kit includes an 18t cog, but 16t and 20t are also available.

Included in the Kit:

  • 1 Lock Ring (6061 Aluminum)
  • 1 Carrier Ring (7075 Aluminum)
  • 1 End Spacer (6061 Aluminum)
  • 1 5mm Spacer (6061 Aluminum)
  • 2 2mm Spacers (6061 Aluminum)
  • 1 1mm Spacer (6061 Aluminum)
  • 1 18T Cog (7075 Aluminum)

The whole kit retails for $120, and is available in eight colors including….

The new Colorado Copper. The new legacy color is said to pay tribute to Colorado’s rich heritage of copper mining, and Copper Mountain.

The main photo is an XD driver not a MS body.

Is it too much to ask that somebody make an adapter that lets me use my existing collection of nice SS cogs? It can’t be that hard.

Yep, only reason I am running geared on my XD wheelset, otherwise my entire fleet would be SS.
