The carbon Alanera handlebar was one of the first 1-piece integrated cockpits in the pro peloton, and now a lighter Deda Alanera RS has been reshaped to be faster and more comfortable. The changes are subtle but impactful. An all-new aero shape to the tops promises to improve both aerodynamics and rider comfort. And while cables fully disappear inside for modern road compatibility, Deda slightly tweaks the Alanera RS’s ergonomics with a bit of flare and slightly less drop…

At first glance, it still looks a lot like the original Alanera handlebar + stem combo that we spotted back in 2017. And the same cockpit Tadej Pogačar won the Tour on. But there really are several significant improvements, almost hidden in plain sight. The biggest difference comes in the reshaped top – a critical spot where aerodynamics and rider ergonomics meet.

More aero, more comfy, and lighter too!

The new Alanera RS features a 5mm thinner profile for its tops, adopting a truncated aerofoil shape instead of the previous angular quadrilateral.

Deda says that reshaping alone saves 3.9W at 40 km/h (up to a 15.5W reduction at 60 km/h race speeds)!

Besides a shape more comfortable to wrap a hand around up top, Deda gives the Alanera RS handlebars 6° of flare to its drops to allow more space for your forearms when you sprint. That flare, plus 10° of UCI allowable shifter inclination means riders can turn those levers in a bit more for an aero hand position.

Deda redesigned a flatter updated Rapid Hand Movement EVO shape for a smoother transition from your hoods to the tops, with better forearm support. And lastly, bar drop decreases by 10mm to 120mm, sliding them into the more popular compact category.

All that, and Deda says the updated “full monocoque” one-piece carbon construction with no bonded sections resulted in a smooth internal surface for easy cable routing, a 6% reduction in weight, and best-in-class stiffness-to-weight ratio.

I’m sure they did all the proper simulation and fatigue testing before releasing these but those sharp inside corners at the bar/stem junction trigger my danger radar.

I’m sure failure points are clamp, then where levers are attached, then that sharp corner.
My guess is it’s over built for that reason and to allow weights weenies to complain it’s too heavy

That’s extremely disappointing. The 2 major flaws the previous bars had are still present. The stupid sharp edge where your hands would sit in a climbing position on the bars is awful. And the drop where the shifters bolt on is so steep that it leaves an odd cavity that the palm of your hands then have to try fit in. They can’t, it’s to small a cavity. For reference I have a set of the old version. By far the worst designed bars I’ve ever come across. Extremely uncomfortable everywhere except in the drops.
