Trailcraft 152mm crank arms upgrade for kids bicycles with 104bcd

One of the toughest parts of a kids bike to upgrade can be the crankset, with many shipping with the older square-hole mount and triple chainring clusters with all of the rings permanently pinned together. The former means you can’t just slap one a high end crankset on it (which would probably be too long anyway), and the latter means it’s all but impossible to convert it to a 1x or 2x system to save a little weight.

Fortunately, upstart premium youth mountain bike brand Trailcraft is now selling their own cranksets separately, making it easy to upgrade your kids bike to a proper crankset that comes with 32/22 chainrings and an external bash guard, which helps with outboard chain retention. Once you’ve got ’em, you can slap any 104BCD chainring down to a 30-tooth on them, including the Race Face narrow-wide chainrings used on their complete 1×10 Pineridge bikes.

They mount onto the standard tapered square spindle bottom bracket commonly used on kid’s bikes. Weight is 448g (cranks, rings, bash guard and bolts), length is 152mm and retail is $79.99.

This looks like a good idea for kid’s bikes or short person’s bikes. The price is reasonable and square taper gives you lots of options for spindle length. Plus anything the takes a boat anchor off a kid’s bike is a plus. Even with larger bikes, my daughter was a lot more into mountain biking after I swapped out the heavy suspension fork on her small adult hardtail for a much lighter air fork.

C’mon BR, have you never heard of square taper cranks and BBs? “older square-hole mount” and “standard tapered square spindle”? Really?

Those “tapered square spindle” BBs are almost always installed in standard English threaded BBs. Just like standard external bearing cups. So yeah, you could just throw in any other high end crank.

You still have the issues of length and cost which these absolutely address, so good product despite the writing.

BMX square taper race cranks in 110 5 arm are available all over the place down to 140mm or so, for cheaper. Just FYI.

Yeah, the short arms (152 mm from Trailcraft’s web site but not mentioned above), replaceable chainrings and a decent price make this an attractive upgrade for an older child or small adult rider.

You can buy 152mm cranks with 44/32/22 replacable rings for $40 on the auction site.

Trailcraft website advertises at 615 grams not 448 grams. That a big difference.
Maybe 448g without rings and bolts and bash????

24+ with a 12 x 138 rear end is only a matter of time, everyone!

Honestly, though, short cranks are a great idea.
