The 29er has sure had its ups and downs in recent years. In 2016, all of the bikes in Devinci’s XC Race category were based on 27.5″ wheels. Fast forward a year, and now there is just one bike in the category, and it is rolling on 29″ wheels. While the new Wooky Carbon XT looks extremely similar to the 2016 Darwin Carbon SL, a few important details highlight the new platform like the switch to the larger wheels…

Joining most of the industry in axle sizing, the Wooky not only moves to 29″ wheels but it moves to Boost standards front and rear. The 12 x 148mm rear and 15 x 110mm front axle widths help to increase the wheel stiffness, especially for the larger 29″ hoops. Combined with a DMC-G carbon fiber frame and a Fox Float 32 Boost fork, and the chassis seems like it should be more than ready come race day. Other details include a PF30 bottom bracket, tapered head tube, and a single build kit featuring a 1×11 Shimano XT drivetrain.

Coming in at $2999, the bike has a claimed weight of 10.28 kg/22.66 lbs for a medium complete and is available in S-XL sizes.

I have a 23″ cube bike. It weight 23lbs with a dropper post and (3) chain rings up front. Will never understand 1x bikes, are they for people who race in Florida? Where I live we have mountains, 3x all day and every day every time..

If you are running SRAM Eagle (which this bike isn’t!) on a 29er, your gear range ends up being the same as what you’d have on an old 3×8 26er. The rollout for a low gear of 34/50 on a 29er is about the same as the rollout of a 22/28 on a 26er, and the high gear of 34/10 on a 29er actually has more rollout than the high gear of 42/11 on a 26er.
If 50-10 cassettes trickle down to lower-priced groups, the gear loss argument against one-by setups will largely be negated. Do the math.

Interestingly I don’t understand why anyone would want anything but a 1x setup. I’m a middle of the road MTBer that avgs 2K miles over the past 6 years and can pick apart some super nasty tech climbs with ease thx to eagle. 1×11 was hard in 11-42 gear range but they have new cassette ranges that are comparable.. but to each his own.

Standover height between 411mm and 494mm?! This is why if you do drugs you should take a day off.
