Based on the 2017 Dirty Kanza 200-winning Avion Disc wheelset, Stan’s NoTubes has now released a rim brake version called Avion Pro R. The full carbon rims were given a heat-resistant brake track and standard hubs to fit regular road bikes that still want to take advantage of tubeless tires.

And wider tires. They have a massive 21.6mm internal diameter, with reinforced sidewalls to handle the higher air pressure used on the road. It’s designed around 25-28mm wide tires pumped up to 115psi (with or without tubes, or 32-50mm wide tires running up to 45psi. Either way, they’re held in place using the brand’s ultra low profile Bead Socket Technology.

…new Neo R Ultimate Speed Sync hubs that get 5º engagement, updated bearing placement to improve stiffness, and Shimano or Campagnolo freehub body options. Claimed weight is 1455g for the set, and they come pre-taped with Stan’s yellow rim tape and 55mm tubeless valves stems. Also included are quick release skewers and their Avion R blue compound brake pads. Retail is $2,249 (£1,900).

    • Technically, they picked the same graphic that they have been using on the disc brake version of these wheels.

  1. It is interesting when companies use a high profile win to sell products. As if the only reason or honestly any reason that the winner won was because they where on brand X’s wheels. it is even more interesting when people that buy them spout off about it as if anyone actually cares.

    • This is something that’s been done in every type of racing for many decades. In motor racing at least as far back as the 60’s, it’s been said that what wins on Sunday sells on Monday. Cycling manufacturers have rightly taken a page out of that handbook, and it’s served them well. Trek and Specialized have certainly been the beneficiaries of big names winning on their bikes, and so have many other manufacturers.

      Part of being in business is selling your product or services. Why wouldn’t someone take advantage of such high profile uses and successes of their products?

      We should be thankful for all those marketing campaigns based on race results. Those campaigns result in sales, which result in money going into the industry, which results in more products and innovation, which is results in greater choice for everyone, which results in lower prices and that cool stuff that we ride and then come to BR to complain about.

  3. I’ve been using the Disc version since we began testing our Kensuke model a couple years back. I am astounded at how solid these wheels have been. Not that I expected anything less from Stan’s but I’ve tested my Avions with 25’s, 28’s and upwards of 44’s at all different pressures and conditions. They are fantastic. Looking forward to stocking the canti version for our customers who still believe in the canti brake.
