Last summer Sweet Protection got into the aero road helmet game, but what they didn’t mention then was that they were also developing an everyday road bike helmet. This new do-it-all Outrider combines the safety & tech of their top-end road & trail helmets – including standard or MIPS versions – with low weight & reliable ventilation, all in a more affordable package.

Sweet Protection Outrider all around road bike helmet

Sweet Protection debuted their first dedicated road helmet for the aero road sector with the Falconer and its removable magnetic aerodynamic covers. But many riders just want something a bit more simplified for everyday road riding. That’s where the Outrider comes in. It shares the same safety tech in a helmet that balances openness for ventilation into a compact and affordable shell for day-to-day riding.

Ventilation on the new Outrider uses generously open front facing vents paired to deep internal channels and a more closed top to move air across the head while maintaining some aero benefits. Sweet specifically targets airflow in and across the rider’s temples, as they claim this has the best cooling impact while still offering a high degree of protection in a crash.

Both versions of the Outrider a two piece polycarb shell over the in-mold EPS foam liner. Retention is handled by the same Occigrip dial in two directions as used on Sweet’s trail helmets. The MIPS version just adds in the multi-directional impact protection system for extra security.

Outrider MIPS

The MIPS equipped Outrider retails for 150€ and comes in a standard and women-specific version, with a claimed weight of 260g for a medium.

The unisex version is available in red, white, or black in sizes S-L. And the WMN version comes only in white/purple and just the S & M sizes.

The standard Outrider shares that same overall shell, simply minus the MIPS liner. The difference of course is a lower price at just 120€, and what typically results in slightly better ventilation. The standard Outrider comes in three black versions with gold, red, or silver accents or in white/silver or this blue/white combo.

Availability

Both this new Outrider helmet in standard & MIPS versions and all models of the aero Falconer are in stores now, and shipping direct from Sweet. Spring has sprung. Dust off the road bike. Strap on a new lid, and get out on the road.

What’s next? A Track prototype?

On top of all those new road helmets, Sweet Protection looks to be going even further away from their trail origins. Thanks to the Instagram account of Thomas Larsen Røed who was the product designer for the Outrider & Falconer, we get a glimpse of their next project – a fully aero helmet for track racing or time trials, with only a small top vent.
