Just can’t crack that top 10 on the Strava Leaderboard for a segment? Get ready to do laps. The new Strava Local Legends feature creates a separate leaderboard that prizes quantity over speed.

Want to be the Local Legend on your favorite segment? Just ride it more than anyone else.

A rolling 90 day window means it’s only looking at your efforts for the past three months. So, just getting out to ride means you’re more likely to rank.

It won’t show every other local riders’ segment count, so you can’t target specific users to beat them. You’ll be able to see your segment count, and you will be able to see the segment count leader for each segment with the number of times they’ve completed that segment.

how do I win the strava local legends ranking

How does Strava define “local”?

Since it’s counting the leader for select segments, you can be the Local Legend for a particular segment in your local area. It’s not creating an actual “area”, just letting you know who the most prolific riders (or runners) are for a particular segment.

At launch, it’ll be in Beta and in testing for select cities. And it won’t be for every segment in every city right away. They’ll be gathering feedback to see what’s interesting to users, and which segments really matter. There are plenty of “junk” segments on Strava (they have more than 15 million segments globally!), many of which don’t need a Local Legend. Here’s the official schedule, followed by more details:

  • June 10, 2020: Local Legends launches for all segments in CA, CO, NY, NJ, TX, IL, and FL.
  • July 15, 2020: Local Legends launches for all segments in remaining US States, plus all segments in the UK, France, Spain, Germany, Japan and Brazil.

sträva local legends feature will show you if you have ridden a segment more than anyone else in the past 90 days

Not all regions will have the same experience while the program is in beta. The Local Legends beta will include all segments in CA and CO. Athletes in those states will be able to see their position on a 90 day leaderboard versus the leader for all segments.

Athletes in the Local Legends beta who live in other states and countries will see their top 10 most-attempted segments (based on their activities over the last 90 days), and where they sit on the 90 day leaderboard vs. the leader for each of those 10 segments.

Who says getting a trophy just for showing up is all bad?

“There are plenty of “junk” segments on Strava”

Amen to that. I know it doesn’t really affect me, but I hate when there are dozens of overlapping duplicate segments on a stretch of path or road. I would sign up for a Strava ‘Super-Premium’ membership if it came with the ability to go in and clean my area up by deleting these (or just making them private for whoever created them). More segments isn’t always better.

Back to the new feature, it’s seems kind of neat and would be fun to see who hits segments super often so long as they pick good ones to have this feature on.

You can hide the segments you don’t want to see through the desktop version

Sounds great, I’m mostly riding e-bikes now a days. Is there any plans for e-bike riders. It’s great having new segments to chase, but we really need live segments. When’s this going to happen?

This is a great idea! While I have a few KOMs under my name, this is great to motivate people to keep riding as not everyone wants to go fast. As long as Strava keeps on improving for their users, I think ppl will keep on paying.

I always felt they should’ve bought Sufferfest, as the ride data they collected over the years will help a lot for Sufferfest workouts and will make the training section more worthwhile then it’s now which is a joke in my opinion. Or perhaps Xert will be a better buy since it does use analytics to make a smart training profile which will benefit greatly from Strava data.

Should be released to premium/summit/paying members first! Or is it only for paying members?

Strava’s pivot to entice more paid subscribers by restricting the leaderboards and not counting KOMs of unpaid members is having the reverse effect on me as a user. I have been a paid Summit member since they launched that program and I actually appreciated the tiered subscription model that allowed a subscriber to pay for the services that were wanted without the fluff of unused services.

Now, with my Summit membership expired and seeing the unpaid member version… I’m not inclined to continue paying. The routing feature has always been a joke and completely inferior to so many other alternatives from RWGPS, Garmin, Komoot, etc. The segments, KOMs, and leaderboards are no longer the motivating factor for me to continue engaging on the platform. They were for awhile… then that got old and tired when other riders started gaming the segments with digital doping, TTTing a segment to ensure it cannot be taken by a solo rider, waiting for a windy day in the right direction to KOM, and now with the introduction of E-bikes… game over.

I spent this morning deleting every segment I have ever created, public and private. The social engagement of following my riding buddies and peers will probably keep me from deleting my profile wholesale, but I feel certain my presence on the site will be greatly reduced.

Now, with this announcement of “Local Legends” they seem to be grasping at straws to rely less on the tippy-top of the leaderboards so as to pivot to participation trophies. To that end; I say meh.

Local legends means you must expose all of your rides publicly and, therefore; allow anyone looking at an area to view your activity, patterns of riding, locations, etc… in other words; the opposite of privacy. I, for one, have grown tired of being the commodity for the social network sites to market and continue reaping profit from my sweat (literally).

I deleted my Facebook profile in 2016 after the campaign and election, along with all the privacy violations. They have not only not improved on that front… but wantonly blown out the doors of any perceived privacy one might’ve thought they had. Instagram was deleted a year later, and that really just left Twitter and Strava for social interaction… I’m what they would classify as “low engagement” on Twitter but was sufficiently engaged on Strava with the Summit membership. I guess now I become a hermit… at least I still have email.

has strava given users the ability to change the screen layout during a ride? the last time I used the phone app, average heart rate and average speed were the only options for those metrics which are probably the most useless measurement. I now use the Apple Watch app which gives me the live version of both HR and speed.

Also is there a way to pull out the segments into a GPX file? I want to get the route for the local trails out and uploaded to another service like RWGPS or wahoo so I can cut the cord on strava.
