Bosch’s e-bike drive systems get big software and hardware updates this summer to boost the torque outputs from eMTB to e-cargo bikes, while new & updated displays give riders more control over everything from new trail navigation to integrated electronic shifting. Performance Line CX are their flagship motors that power eMTB trail riding, but even the Bosch Speed & Cargo powertrains get the same boosted outputs and updates.

Pretty much all of the new eMTB updates in the 2021 Bosch Performance Line CX e-bike powertrains come by virtue of optimized software that control the motors. That means that not only will new e-bike get the perfromance improvements, but e-bike riders who bought 2020 CX-powered eMTBs will be able to drop into select e-bike dealer for an update.

What that software does is bump torque up to 85Nm for quicker acceleration at low speeds, an Extended Boost mode that delivers consistent power for longer to navigate tough obstacles, and a new eMTB-specific mode that puts the power down more smoothly for cleaner starts on steep & loose terrain and overall improved control on the trail.

Kiox eMTB navigation

The small, mobile phone connected color Kiox cycling computer that already powers many CX eMTBs, now also adds route navigation functionality. You plan routes in the companion app or online, then send them to the device via Bluetooth from your phone. The new Kiox routing keeps it simple with a breadcrumb style track to follow, but can be connected with Strava, Komoot & other routing systems for detailed ride planning. All the same ride tracking & e-bike system management continues, with a simple over-the-air software update adding the new navigation capability this summer to existing Kiox users.

eShift electronic shift integration

Integrating eShift electronic shifting with e-bike system controls isn’t super new, but for the 2021 model year Bosch takes it to new extents, linking in shift systems from Shimano, Rohloff & Enviolo to cover trail, road & commuter e-bikes. Not only smoothing shifts, Bosch says eShift will “ensure longer range” as well.

Integration varies depending on the system and application used – from displaying gearing to automatic shifting. Enviolo’s Automatiq variable gear ratio hub lets you dial in your ideal cadence, then automatically shifting to maintain e-bike assist and smooth rider input. With eRohloff you get smooth manual shifts and auto-downshifts when you come to a stop.

Bosch eShift with Shimano Di2 offers the biggest range of possibilities. Whether you are looking at Nexus or Alfine electronic gear hubs that can be manually or automatically shifted, or XT/XTR, GRX, or Dura-Ace/Ultegra Di2 derailleurs which you control manually.

Nyon computer, and Bosch Performance Line Speed & Cargo updates

Beyond the higher-end eMTB market, the Bosch urban and commuter powertrains also get updated. That same bump up to 85Nm of torque comes to 2021 Performance Line Speed and Performance Line Cargo systems as well, with dealer upgrades available for 2020 models too.

There’s also an all new 3.2″ color Nyon cycling computer to manage the e-bike and connected app. Much like the Kiox, but with more than 50% larger display, the new Bluetooth-connected, touchscreen Nyon opens up more e-biking connectivity and integration, from navigation & ride tracking, to parking locks & e-support control – all coming later towards the end of the year.
