How does the Mavic Mini 2 compare to the original?
DJI says the motors, image transmission, camera performance, intelligent features, and user experience have all improved significantly. The most impressive upgrade is the switch to OcuSync 2.0 from enhanced Wi-Fi, which gives it a 10km video transmission range. Controls have also gotten easier use.
Otherwise, they’ll look similar in size. The main changes include orange propeller tips, an additional front light, a clickable aircraft status indicator, and smoother connection between the rear arm and the aircraft frame.

As with their other models, you’ll need to insert a MicroSD card to capture any footage. Without a card installed, you can still see what the camera sees through the app/remote, but it won’t save any of it.
The Mavic Mini 2 uses a 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor with up to 12 million effective pixels. The camera is stabilized on a 3-axis motorized gimbal.

You can adjust Shutter Speed, ISO, and White Balance in Manual mode.
It supports 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz simultaneously, automatically switching between them to use the best frequency for the conditions…or simply limiting it to the frequency that’s allowed in a given area.
Weight is 242g with battery, SD card, and propellers. The battery is good for a maximum of 31 minutes flight time, at an altitude up to 500m. It has a max “service ceiling” of 4,000m and max wind resistance (precision hovering) up to 10.5m/s (24mph). So, probably not the tool for mountaineering, but fine for more casual adventures.
Why upgrade to the Mavic Air?
The Mavic Mini 2 lacks the obstacle avoidance sensors of its bigger siblings. It comes with removable propeller guards, which do offer some protection from crashes, but also adds weight and slows it down slightly. In fact, the guard may push it over 250g, which means you may be required to register it in some regions.
What’s included with the Mavic Mini 2?
For $449, you get the drone, remote with joysticks, battery, USB-C charging cable, and three different cables to link the remote with the app on your smartphone. You also get a few extra propellers and screws, a mini screwdriver, and a protective lens cover for use during transport and storage to stabilize and protect the gimbal mechanism.
The DJI Mavic Mini 2 Fly More bundle gives you two extra batteries and multi-battery charging cradle, a storage case and cradle, even more propellers and screws, and a USB wall plug. Retail for the kit is $599.
