Last season two elite Dutch cyclocross riders raced the Canyon Inflite to World Championship wins in Switzerland. Now Canyon has the new model year 2021 of their rainbow stripe winning CX bike ready. And Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado & Mathieu van der Poel’s Alpecin-Fenix team replica paintjob is available from the race-ready, but entry-level alloy bike all the way up to the top-spec carbon model…

Reigning elite Cyclocross World Champions Mathieu van der Poel and Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado both head into the upcoming (fingers crossed) 2020/2021 cyclocross season racing the same bike they rode to the big win last season. While they’ll end up on a quiver of custom-painted bikes covered in well-earned rainbow stripes, you can get the same Inflite CF SLX they race in their standard paint scheme of their Alpecin-Fenix team (in three different variants).

Canyon hasn’t really changed anything with the carbon or alloy framesets. But maybe that’s a case of ‘don’t mess with a winning formula’, topped off with solid value specs from 1600-4500€.

The Inflite with its signature “kink” (Canyon’s official term) to add extra seatpost extension for more comfort at the saddle has been hard to argue with as solid ‘bang for your buck’ performance since its introduction in carbon three summers ago, and then in upgraded premium affordable aluminum a year later. Race-proven long & fast geometry, plenty of mud clearance (UCI 33mm tires are standard with plenty of room for 38mm tires out of competition), 1x or 2x drivetrain compatibility, and a wide eight size range (XXXS-XXL) that puts 650b/27.5 wheels on the two smallest bikes to ensure consistent handling for cross racers of all sizes.

The big update this year is updated paint jobs and spec, plus a move away from selling framesets on their own as Canyon says there just wasn’t much real demand for riders looking for custom builds.

Finally canyon got rid of that truly awful yellow and black paint job. I bought a new cross bike last year and I really wanted this bike but I couldn’t get past how ugly the pain schemes were.

I suspect they will see a big increase in sales now that they look much better.

It’s crazy how people judge by the looks…hmmmm

Crazy how people don’t understand that aesthetic is very much a part of cycling since, like, forever. …hmmm.

Some of these new paint jobs are truly hideous, and most are quite corporate. Team Pepto Bismol might be interested in that grotesque pink one, though!

Maybe no one bought the framesets because they were only available in grey! I’d take a mint or team color way as a frameset!

Never been a fan of the “look” of the kinked top tube but I think the paint schemes look great. Nice to see a 2-color scheme that really accents the frame’s shape. Seems like most of the major makes have gotten ever more conservative and simple in their paintjobs + doing things that were big in the 90’s.

The frames look exceptionally high standover height comparatively to road bikes. Does this mean buy one size smaller to compensate for standover height?

Nou. CX bikes do have higher standover, due it is being carried on shoulder on races. You shall not compensate with smaller size. Riding position is pretty much the same as with road, Slam stem and kamikaze on loose terrain 😉
