You might recall the crowd-funded “nearly indestructible” Bike Capsule from storage solution company ALPEN. This spring, the ALPEN team launched the Basecamp model, which improves on the original design by adding more interior space and network connectivity. Now, urban bike storage is part of the IOT.

ALPEN says the Basecamp Bike Capsule is its response to uptick in eBike and urban cycling popularity. Its added smart features and capacity mirror the adjustment.
So does its potential dual utility between public and private use. The Basecamp’s features position it as a fixture anyone can use as long as they have the app. It can function like a high-tech sidewalk bike rack, or a compact personal bike garage.
IOT technology
In terms of connectivity, the Basecamp comes with location information and an integrated smart lock. Using the ALPEN smartphone app, riders can locate, reserve, lock, unlock, and share the unit remotely. For those who rent their bike capsules, monthly payments can be made through the app, too.
The Basecamp includes a grommet-protected charging port in the rear so you can thread a cord inside from a wall outlet to charge your eBike. And in case the unit’s keyless entry lock starts to run out of juice, a covered, integrated USB port lets owners recharge it.
Owners can root it to the spot with attachment options for “most ground surfaces.” And ALPEN offers an optional Hiplok ground anchor to lock bikes to inside.
More storage capacity
The recent boom has inspired innovations in eBike design and traditional bike geometry. The brand increased the Basecamp locker’s larger interior capacity to accommodate almost any type of bike.
According to ALPEN, the Basecamp is able to fit 29ers, extra-wide handlebars, fat bikes, and just about any varietal of eBike on the market today. All of that comes with the original Capsule’s highly durable and weatherproof rotomolded shell.
