Apidura has updated their bike commuter City Backpack with a larger 20l version tweaked for improved everyday usability. Whether you need to carry a change of clothes on your ride to the office, packing a homemade lunch, or need to swap out street shoes when you get to your destination by bike, the bigger and more adjustable bag is simply more versatile.
Apidura City Backpack 20L
We reviewed Apidura’s first City Backpack two years back, as they adapted their bikepacking experience to an everyday bag for the urban bike commuter. With its boxy shape, waterproof materials, and plenty of storage inside, that first 17l back proved useful for my regular rides to the European Bikerumor Tower offices (a co-working space in Prague). But it’s true that while it safely ferried my laptop, thin shoes & a change of clothes, I didn’t carry lunch and a bulkier pair of shoes wouldn’t fit.
So, starting with the 17l bag, Apidura made it 17% bigger… and more adjustable.
What’s new?
It’s 3 liters more storage.
That’s not a lot, but just enough. And the new bag is more adjustable.
While the original was essentially fixed at 45cm (17.7″) tall, this new 20l bag is still just about 30cm (11.8″) wide and can vary from 50-56cm (19.7-22″) tall thanks to a new easier-to-use cinch-down closure with a quick magnetic clasp.
The bigger backpack is also two centimeters deeper, now up to 15cm (5″), and weighs an extra forty-five grams at a claimed 765g.
The new bigger bag also features a simplified internal organizer based on user feedback, placing a single zippered inside pocket on the fuzz-line padded laptop pouch. And still with a bright yellow interior to help find small items. The bag’s structure has been tweaked a bit too so it conforms more to the shape of your back while pedaling, vs. the rather rigid original.
Outside, the rest of the backpack is very much the same. You still get a long waterproof zipper pocket, padded shoulder straps with adjustable sternum strap, padded back panel, taillight attachment loops, and simple removable webbing hip belt. What’s new is a lot more reflective detailing for improved visibility. Now The shoulder straps get reflective strips to be seen from ahead while on the bike, plus more reflective stripes across the rear.
