If you’re in the market for a new headset, the choices can be overwhelming. First you have to make sure you get the right size for your frame and your fork. Then you have to wade through a sea of options that all look fairly similar. It’s just a couple of bearings and metal cups, right?

Well, higher end headsets often are lighter weight, higher precision, and offer far better bearings. But even the best bearings will wear out eventually. That’s why Cane Creek is ramping up their lifetime guarantee on their premium 110 headsets to 100%. That means not only will Cane Creek replace any component of the headset if there’s a problem, but they’ll also replace the bearings. Cane Creek claims that this is all done up front, no questions asked. There’s not even a requirement for proof of purchase.

That’s a pretty impressive guarantee on one of the best headsets on the market. The only catch? It’s not retroactive, the guarantee only applies to headsets purchased after August 28th, 2019. But if you’re in the market for a new headset, it certainly makes the 110 series even more appealing.

8yrs on one of these for year-round MTBing in UK – pretty much as new. Excellent kit, viable alt to King.

About the same thing for me. A cross bike in New England, riding salted roads through winter, on trails with mtb, commuting, those bearings are good as new. My lower cup has some scrapes, but that’s on me.

Bearings in a lightweight component guaranteed for life is just stupid. For consumers without any background in mechanical engineering or material science this creates a completely wrong impression with regards to the service life expectancy.
And bike shop owners and mechanics will also rejoice because they are the ones who have to replace the worn bearings. For free!
And yes, even those bearings wear as those made by Chris King do. Just ride your bike enough and it’s inevitable.

Not stupid at all. They know that the very few people who actually wear their headset out to the point of needing replacement, won’t cost them very much, and will likely be happy that Cane Creek met their guarantee. For everyone else it’s a feel good exercise and good publicity.

Nothing says that a shop couldn’t charge a fair labor price to install the bearings. Cane Creek will send you a new set of bearings if yours wear out, but it’s on you to install them yourself or pay someone to do it. Considering that the bearings cost almost as much as a complete headset, that doesn’t seem like good business sense, but that’s CC’s problem, not the shop’s, and they’re the ones who came up with the idea.

i remember calling cane creek about 5 yrs ago and asking what the 110 year warranty meant. they said everything but the bearings. i thought in my head useless warranty. still bought one anyways because chris king didn’t have their grip lock out yet. they are probably feeling pressure from chris king.

Yes, a company saying that they will ensure you are not dissatisfied with your product is stupid — right STS. Sure things wear out and pros like yourself understand that and will not take advantage of the company.

If it only applies to product purchased after 8/28/19 but no proof of purchase is required – how does that work?

Just a guess: by looking at the serial number of the part being replaced?

I’ve emailed CaneCreek 3 times in the past about another issue. How many times did I get a response? Zero times. Their customer service is a black hole.

I wore out the lower headset bearing in a 110 a few years ago. I called Cane Creek and they sent a free replacement bearing. Quickly. Which was easy to install myself.

So, I’m out of luck with a lifetime warranty on my Cane Creek 110…hmmm, mine has a 110 year warranty, unless I live to be 154 years old I don’t think my Cane Creek warranty will run out. 110 years is the same as a lifetime warranty.
