It wasn’t long ago when Zach and I were caught in a, well, unexpected downpour. The fact that we didn’t pack any kind of rain jacket for this deceivingly nice day did not help our situation. Castelli’s Idro jacket may make the decision to bring a rainfly easier, provided you can afford it. Splash past the break to see what makes it so valuable…

The Idro jacket features the latest GORE-TEX waterproof fabric, GORE Active, that claims to offer the same permanent protection as a heavy-duty rain jacket. With the improved protection the jacket is still said to be able to share a jersey pocket with a phone, spare tube, and energy bar. All of the YKK zippers are waterproof, and there’s a back zipper to access the jersey pockets. The wrist cuffs and torso are flush and elastic to help keep water from seeping under while moving. Castelli’s Idro jacket weighs in at 123 grams and priced at $350.

Yet another black rain jacket.
Apparently most cycle clothing designers believe black is a good signal color.

I’d much rather have something small that wasnt waterproof but warm. I have found that even the best breathable fabrics still dont breathe all that well and I get just as wet as if I’d just left it off.

Warm
Dries quickly
Packs small
Doesnt require a second mortgage to purchase

Not a rain jacket, but my go-to packable jacket is an REI house brand jacket. Extremely light, stuffs into a tiny pocket neatly, and does the intended job well. On sale it was literally 10x cheaper than this. Sometimes you really do just pay for a label…
