Chris King is all about creating precision bike parts that are both serviceable and expected to last a very long time. In this second major (golden) announcement from the company’s 50th anniversary celebration, a new tool was introduced in the fight against friction. Let’s meet the new Chris King Gold Grease. This is a new lubricant formulated specifically for their hub and bottom bracket bearings as part of King’s ongoing performance improvements.

They developed the new Gold Grease lubricant after extensive testing of various options. Looking for better speed and durability characteristics when compared to the now-discontinued Silver Grease.

The testing results show measurable performance differences. Gold Grease produces 25% less drag than Silver Grease right out of the box. And, it maintains a 16% advantage even after 1000 miles of use.

The lubricant also demonstrates what the company calls a “wear-in” effect. This effect occurs when drag decreases by 18% over the first 1000 miles compared to the initial performance. This addresses the balance between two key bearing characteristics: reducing drag for speed while maintaining long-term durability.

Chris King’s President, Kirby Bedsaul, had this to say: “Obviously, we put a lot of effort into making our components look good and last a long time, but at the end of the day, riders want components that perform. And that has always been one of our core tenets, too. Gold Grease reduces bearing drag and improves bearing life, so it quite literally makes you faster. It’s also a more stable lubricant, so it extends service life, too.

Gold Grease Retail & Sizes

Gold Grease represents a completely new formulation rather than a rebranding of existing products. It’s now available as a permanent addition to Chris King’s lineup through authorized retailers and their website at the link below.

I worked with a cx team that was sponsored by King, the first thing they would do is remove all the seals. I’d only buy King if you enjoy adjusting your hs & hubs all the time, & high drag

Seems like your Chris Kings are different to the ones I work on every day.

If you remove all of the seals of course you can expect maintenance issues. As for drag, nonsense. These are very low-rpm (hub) and no-rpm (headsets) bearings. Turning them with your fingers tells you almost nothing about efficiency in use context.

I’ll second this. Chris King hubs are the most high-maintenance hubs I’ve ever owned. I’ve switched off from them as a result. On two separate wheel sets, each required multiple re-adjustments per year to remove play. Re-greasing after a tell-tell squeak developed multiple times throughout the year. Usually on the front wheel. Also had a rear hub that fully seized after a gravel race in the rain. Unbeknownst to me, water seeped through the seals and couldn’t get out. Corroded the entire hub within a week.

Bottom brackets fare better but are high-drag when compared to even stock SRAM BBs. No comparison to something like a Ceramicspeed BB.

Headsets seem bombproof overall.

If you want your stuff to last days instead of decades, by all means go for Ceramicspeed. Or SRAM.
