The new DJI Osmo Action 6 action camera introduces several new features that will up the game of any cycling content creator looking to do more than just point and shoot.
It’s the first action camera to incorporate a variable aperture system, offering a range from f/2.0 to f/4.0. This departure from traditional fixed-aperture designs allows users to adjust settings based on different shooting scenarios, with the wider aperture providing enhanced low-light performance. Combine that with a larger 1/1.1″ sensor, and it could be the best low-light action camera yet.
The Osmo Action 6’s custom 1/1.1-inch square CMOS sensor isn’t just bigger, it’s also square. This means you can switch between horizontal and vertical in post without needing to flip the camera on its side and shoot specifically for one format or the other.
Plus, it adds Subject Tracking, letting you shoot horizontal, then quickly output a vertical video with you (or your subject) staying centered in the frame.

The camera records video at 4K resolution up to 120 frames per second in a 4:3 aspect ratio. For slow-motion capture, the device supports native 4K/120fps recording and can generate up to 32x slow-motion playback at 1080p through frame interpolation technology.

The camera includes various aperture modes, including Auto mode with adaptive range options and Starburst mode for creating light burst effects in urban settings. Optional accessories expand functionality, including a Macro Lens that reduces minimum focus distance from 35cm to 11cm, and a FOV Boost Lens that extends the field of view from 155° to 182°. The device incorporates DJI’s RockSteady 3.0 stabilization system with horizon balancing capabilities.

Additional features include SuperNight mode for low-light recording at 4K/60fps, 10-bit D-Log M color recording, 2x lossless zoom, and various automated tracking and subject detection functions.

Overall, it’s a compelling entry if for no other reason than the improved aperture range should allow far better low light performance, like when riding under tree cover. And the square sensor’s added cropping room gives you more flexibility for using the same footage on both social and YouTube.
