Easton’s expanded their EC70 lineup, bringing their performance carbon fiber parts to both road and mountain bikes at more affordable prices than the top level EC90.
The EC70 SL road wheels are a carbon/alloy hybrid that has an alloy rim bead and brake track with a structural carbon aero section that not only serves as the aero fairing but also the spoke bed. Weight is 1660g and they’ll retail for $1,500. Rim is 42mm deep and 15/20mm wide inside/outside. They’re available with three interchangable freehub bodies for SRAM/Shimano 8/9/10, a new 11-speed Shimano version and a Campagnolo one. Really, the 11-speed version will work for S-branded 9/10 speed cogs with a simple spacer, so best to just go ahead and future proof as much as you can…
Close up of the road rim profile. The EC70 SL3 compact handlebar has a short 130mm drop and 75mm reach. It has the exact same shape as the EC90 SL bar and shares the “Intelligent Flex” in the drops to provide comfort without feeling sloppy under power. 230g for the 42cm width, also comes in 40 and 44. $210 MSRP.
The EC70 carbon alloy seatpost uses a carbon shaft with a bonded alloy post and gets new graphics toatxh the wheels and bar.
New EC70 Trail wheels sit between the EC90 XC wheels and the Haven Carbon wheels – basically people that aren’t racing every weekend or hucking big airs but still want high performance and low weight. They come in at 1345g (26″) and 1460g (29er) and have a 20mm inside rim width, right between the two other wheels. Both front and rear use the same length spokes on drive and non-drive sides, making it easier to track down (or stockpile) repair parts.
Axles are convertible between QR and 15 thru front and QR/12×135/12×142 rear, but you’ll have to order the front end caps separately to get the option. Rear wheel comes with all adapters in the box. $1800 (26″) and $1850 (29er). Tubeless compatible, they ship mid/late September.
They’re working on a driver body piece to work with SRAM’s new XX1 system but working on making the bearings bigger when running a 12mm thru axle to improve durability.
The EC70 XC Riser bar comes in at just 155g for a 685mm width. They have 20mm and 40mm rise options.
The EA90 XD wheels are a mix of road and MTB parts to make a bomber disc brake cyclocross bike wheelset. Weight is 1620g using their EA90 road tubeless rim with their M1 mountain bike hubs. Inside rim width is 17.5mm and 24.5mm tall. The front hub is convertible to a 15 thru axle, too, if you wanted to run the new Whisky forks. They’re built with Sapim double butted spokes 20/24 laced 3x. Retail is $850. They even have a machined brake track if you’re not ready to run discs yet, but the ano would wear off pretty quickly.
Need something to put those wheels in? The EC90 XD full carbon fork is disc only (we spotted this a bit early on the Diamondback Stella). Weight is 460g with a 395mm axle to crown length and 45mm rake. It’ll handle 140 and 160 rotors. The steerer tube has a built in threaded section that works with their own stem cap so you don’t have to worry about bonding something in or using an expansion plug.
Hose guide is recessed with clip holes that hide the bulky end of a zip tie. Retail is $550.
