If it wasn’t obvious from the brand’s name, the team at Ergon puts ergonomics at the forefront of every product they make. For mountain biking, Ergon’s saddles and grips have always aimed to provide comfort at the bike’s primary touch points. As mountain bikes continue to evolve, so too have our positions on the bike, and Ergon’s products continue to evolve with it. The brand’s all-new SMS saddle lineup is a prime example.

According to Ergon, “To take pressure off riders, we took a close look at the current trend in mountain bike geometries. What we saw was a new compact riding position that required a modern relief concept to satisfy the needs of a more upright riding posture.”

While they might look very similar to the brand’s existing SM Series of saddles, the SMS models have a revised shape, including a shorter, wider nose, a larger pressure relief channel, and enhanced contouring to match the way we sit on today’s mountain bikes.

Ergon tells us that “The SMS’ larger relief channel and evolved ergonomic contours improves pressure distribution across the saddle. The SMS saddle’s Y-shape and gently curved ergonomic surface improves rider mobility, pedaling dynamics and overall comfort. The compact design with its shortened, flat nose delivers more freedom of movement with significant relief and support when moving forward on steep climbs.

The result is what Ergon claims to be the perfect all-around saddle for trail riding and technical terrain.

It won’t be long and ‘modern geo’ saddles are going to be wider than they are long.
