Fitbit Surge GPS fitness tracker sports watch adds Jens Voigt as brand ambassador and product tester

In late September, the Fitbit Surge (which they claim is the #1 selling GPS watch in the U.S., per NPD) got a software update that further pushes the product into the cycling category.

The update added a timer and stopwatch, helping count down fractions of a second for sprint and interval work. It also extended battery life, letting it run up to 10 hours with GPS turned on and up to 7 days overall. And that includes capturing heart rate data directly from the wrist, too, no need for a chest strap. Then, sync it with Strava and all of your run, bike and other workouts will automatically show up there, too.

And now that Jens Voigt is their newest “performance” Fitbit ambassador, maybe they’re working on an update that’ll scream “Shut Up Legs!” once you hit zone five. Or, at least the new colors coming in November will scream at you…

The GPS tracking records your route along with heart rate, speed and distance, then displays it all in the Fitbit app on your phone via wireless syncing. Other impressive specs include sleep monitoring, text and call alerts (which you can turn off), music control and all-day activity tracking.

Originally available only in black, November will see blue and orange wrist bands become available, too. The Fitbit Surge retails for $249, and we’ve got one on the way for testing.

What sets the Surge apart from other wrist-based trackers with built in heart rate monitoring is that it’s reading your HR constantly, letting you see how it ebbs and flows throughout the day and during rest…all while still getting a week’s worth of data on a single charge. That data can come in handy if, indeed, you really do need to skip leg day to recover properly, or if you’re just making excuses. (hint: #dontskiplegday)

Really Jens! one of the worst fitness devices and ecosystems. why people buy into Fitbit is beyond me!

Care to elaborate into your categorizing FitBit as the “worst fitness devices and ecosystems” statement? My wife wears the Surge and hasn’t had any problems with it and is generally pleased with it. Granted, it’s not perfect but it’s not like there’s anything “perfect” in a sense that FitBit sold over 4 million of their wearables in a single quarter…

sure. Fitbit puts steps in front of everything. download the Fitbit app and link it to your strava or Myfitnesspal and check it out. i only found this out because i wanted to participate in a community challenge. i don’t feel a need to own a fitness band owning a garmin 1000. i also thought these fitness band companies would be on top of it when it comes to equal activity weight. i found out in the case of Fitbit not only is it a extremely closed API for 3rd parties that doesn’t support all standardized track data like but because of that your workouts are never not counted toward those challenges unless there is step data. which funny because all activities are supported? Fitbit of course doesn’t allow you to import directly from .TCX etc files either.

Fitbit has a long history of faulty hardware as well. but I’m not going to get into that.

So unless you just plan on walking a ton i wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who remotely serious about their fitness.

7 days battery life with HR prolly means HR every 30s/1min or more (thats ok but thats the same as everyone else)
That said, its still 7 days, so like 5 day more than the rest, if true, which is nice.

Why use a fit bit when it doesnt even sync with a power meter?

My garmin 920 or 310xt can be used by any of my 6 ANT+ power meters any minute I want it.

My wife has one, and as an FYI, the Strava syncing is a nightmare. Very hit or miss……
