Anthropologie Van Heesch copper plated steel mixte bicycle from The Netherlands

Van Heesch has plumbed the metallurgical rainbow for his collection of mixte bicycles.

Above, the copper plated steel bike uses a classic Dutch style step through frame. It’s made in the Netherlands and has virtually every metal part plated in copper, from the seat’s springs to the fenders to the chain. Yes, even the chain.

Being copper, the bike will take on it’s own tarnish and character over the years. It includes a matching copper plated bell and leather grips and saddle covering. It also includes handling gloves, a velvet bag and a copper chain lock. Available through Anthropologie for a mere $6,000.

The zinc plated one could very well be the most theft proof by blending alongside road fixtures.

Mixte and step-through are two different styles of frames.

I’d love to see the copper bike with a nice patina on it.

I like the industrial look of the zinc. Would be great on a speedy rat bike!

As far as ride quality and weight is concerned I’m glad these frames are copper plated steel and not copper tubes. In my opinion the cost is astronomical in comparison to the true value, even considering the perceived artistic value. Very cool, but I still wouldn’t pay more than around $1000.00 for one of these bikes. I hope who every buys one of these bikes also drives car worth more that $100,000.00…… and my next project will be collecting old cruiser frame and copper plating them.

Bike Rumor loves posting bikes of the rich and famous, and we love complaining about the price. Good Lord! when did commuter bikes become so expensive! Budnitz, Shinola, and now this. Budnitz is actually looking like a good value.

One thing to note is that these bikes will be sold at Anthropologie. The same place you can buy a small block of wood resembling a bench made by a resourceful hobo for $3,400! http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/product/home-furniture/24519290.jsp

The bike is on sale at Anthro right now for $3,000, just in time for the double dip recession.
