Back in mid-spring a Genesis dropped a few early season road & gravel updates. Now the full 2020 range is out, and the UK’s “original adventure brand” has given their Fugio adventure gravel bike a lightweight Reynolds upgrade. Plus, their ever popular gravel Croix de Fer gets a GRX update, the Tarn trail hardtail gets more aggressive, and killer new paint colors & classic fades all around!

While the early 2020 releases focused a lot on the road, Genesis tends to shine taking steel bikes off tarmac. Their 650b road plus Fugio adventure gravel bike is a solid standout. Only introduced two summers ago, the highly versatile mixed-surface bike gets a lighter weight, smoother riding upgrade with a move to a more premium steel tubeset. Now the top Fugio in the range is being made from Reynolds 725 steel tubing, butted & heat-treated for thinner tube walls that shed a few grams and make for a more lively classic steel feel.

The £2700 Fugio 30 also gets a new full carbon tapered steerer fork to shed even more weight (down to 10.98kg complete), plus a new complete Shimano GRX 810 1x drivetrain, a 50mm travel dropper post, tubeless-ready wheels & 650x47mm WTB Venture tires.

Oh, and it now comes in that pretty sunrise orange to yellow fade!

If you just want to build up the new Reynolds 725 steel frame & new full carbon fork on your own, it is also available as a £900 frameset too. The frame is the same as in the top-spec bike, except with an equally nice night sky blue to white fade – available in five stock sizes (XS-XL).

The 3500g frame kit (including frame, fork, headset, seat collar & both axles) uses a 27.2mm seatpost, 68mm threaded BB, a 28.6mm band clamp front mech hanger (if you go 2x), 12mm thru-axles, flat mount disc brakes, and external downtube cable routing (plus internal Di2 routing). The frameset will clear up to a 650b x 60mm or 700c x 40mm tire, and includes braze-ons for full coverage fenders (front & rear), a rear rack, and three sets of water bottle bosses.

In Genesis’ own standard double butted Mjölnir chromoly steel, you can still get the more affordable, lower spec Fugio. The £2000 Fugio 20 uses a chromoly frame with the same features AND the new full carbon fork, plus a SRAM Apex 1×11 group.

And of course, it gets a pretty new light to dark blue fade.

The Croix de Fer is a classic in the Genesis adventure bike lineup. For 2020, not much is really changed about the ever-popular CdF 30 in Reynolds 725 steel, except that it gets a more gravel ready spec with the move to a new clutched Shimano GRX rear derailleur paired to the otherwise complete road compact double 105 hydraulic groupset.

The £2000 Croix de Fer 30 sticks with a painted-to-match unicrown chromoly fork (not the new CGR1 CdF carbon fork) and weighs in at 11.04kg complete, covered in a simple tow-tone green paint scheme.

Lastly for the 2020 updates, Genesis says they’re ‘redefined’ their steel with a move to more meaty tires, and a longer travel fork. The Mjölnir chromoly Tarn first debuted as a 27.5 hardtail, then it grew with a 29er option with 2.25″ tires or 27.5+ and 2.8″ tires. Now it grows one step further with 29×2.6″ tires – with a new max tire size of 29×2.8″ or 27.5×3.0″ for the updated frame with what looks to be strategic chainstay crimping, and  keeping the same 432mm chainstay length.

The only complete build for the new year, the £2200 Tarn 20 also gets and extra 10mm of fork travel, up now to 130mm to take on even more technical trails, and a new Shimano SLX 1×12 drivetrain.

If you are looking to build your own steel trail hardtail, the updated Tarn is available on its own as a £500 frame with the increased tire clearance. Th frame features a 31.6mm post with stealth dropper routing, a threaded BB, Boost spacing, and a threaded bottom bracket.

nice looking bike, but 3500g is hard to swallow when an equivalent carbon frame&fork would be in the 1600g range

Not for a bikepacking capable frame. For reference, a Salsa Cutthroat frameset weighs 2060g without headset, seatclamp and axles. I don’t know what those weigh, but they are all included in the weight of the above bike. The difference between an ultralight carbon backpacking frame and this steel is under 1000g, I’d guess closer to 800. Still significant, but not bad for the better ride quality and durability.

@luddite I dunno. My ti road bike frameset (58cm) with all of the above (not including axles, and extra bracing for disc brakes) is 2.4kg and builds up with Ultegra to just below 8kg. 3.5kg for a steel bike of this class seems reasonable… so long as it’s not an 2XS.

That’s utter bollocks. A Bombtrack Hook EXT-C will provide at least and possibly more capability, and weighs in at 1250g for the frameset and 500g for the fork for a total system weight of 1750g. Even if you discount the weight of the TA’s the Fugio 725 is roughly 3350g. The extra 1600g can go very far in terms of carrying capability.
Yes, the Hook is roughly $400 more than the Fugio but that comes at a weight savings of roughly $0.25 per gram. That’s a pretty phenomenal tradeoff.

Is the 725 Croix de Fer 20in theaddution to the 2020 853 CdF that Genesis has listed on their website, or is the 725 an error?

Interesting, the CdF 20 and 30 are 725, the CdF 10 is house brand CroMo, and the frameset is available in 725 or 853. And that’s not even including the Ti bike and frameset.

Talk about a lot of SKUs…
