Apparently, while we were all sleeping, Southern California’s Intense Cycles released a new addition to their 951 Series line of bikes: the 951 Series gravel bike. Like the 951 Series trail and XC full suspension bikes, the new 951 Series gravel bike is also available for delivery through Costco.com.

Their new gravel bike offering is said to be built for a confident and stable ride by using a relaxed geometry paired with a longer wheelbase. This combo will allow more stability at higher speeds and on steeper terrain.

Focusing on durability, reliability, and performance, Intense has spec’d the Shimano GRX group for the 951 Series Gravel bike, and the WTB Venture 700x40mm tires are tubeless-ready giving you the reliability and confidence needed to ride on any surface with control.

Intense says, “Focused on you… the 951 Gravel has the ability to be tailored to a rider’s specific needs and preferences. Adjustable components like the saddle and handlebar height will help to achieve a comfortable and efficient riding position, while color and aesthetics will inspire confidence and pride in ownership“.

The 951 Series Gravel bike has a carbon fiber frame and fork. The bike also comes with two water bottle cages to keep you hydrated and a set of 3 pack mounts on the fork legs for added racks, bags, or any other attachments that will fit. The 951 Series Gravel also sports some mounts for fenders, in case that’s your jam.

Costco Retail

Retail: $2499 (includes shipping and handling)

As Zach mentioned in an article about the other 951 Series bikes available through Costco.com a few years ago, “Costco Executive members will likely get 2% back on the purchase, and if you purchase it with your Costco Visa, you’ll get an additional 2% cash back, bringing the total purchase price down”.

Cool, but I have some questions. Does Costco sell it in a box? Do they build it for you? Does Costco have bike departments and repair now like REI? There aren’t any near me in the NE so I’m clueless.

I believe these are available from Costco online only. I got my 951 Trail shipped to me in a box, semi-assembled. Full assembly was straightforward and easy. Don’t over tighten the headset (my costly mistake) 🙂

If it’s like the 951 mountain bikes Costco sells it online only not in store. They don’t have a bike department to help with repairs. Like with many direct to consumer bikes you would have to go to your local bike mechanic for additional support.

I have one of the 951 MTB’s. It comes in a box with all the tools you need for assembly. The manual walks you through all the steps to setup the bike. Intense also made videos on how to unpack and assemble the bike. Assembly should be pretty simple, install wheels, pedals, stem/handelbar.

I dont own one but I can pretty much guarantee it will come in a box with the wheels and handlebars detached. Costco does not have a bike department like REI, you could ask you local bike shop for a quote for assembly (maybe as much as $150) if you don’t know how to assemble a bike yourself. The price point and components on this bike lead me to believe it is not intended as an “entry” bike so I think they (the manufacturer and Costco) assume some knowledge by the buyer and the necessary tools to assemble it yourself.

Yes, no, and no. I’m sure you have plenty of local bike shops that would be happy to build it or make any necessary repairs down the road if you’re not capable yourself.

Costo definitely doesnt have a repair department. They stores near me usually just have the typical lower end Costco bikes and some cheap ebikes. These will be sold online only I reckon. I Imagine theyll ship partially assembled in a box like most other bikes and a smart consumer will habe a shop build it up. Or take it to one if they fail at home hah!

They typically don’t build them. They do not have a bike department or repairs.

It’s $500 cheaper to buy it from Costco than to buy it directly from Intense. That must have been an interesting negotiation….

Looks like a good spec for the price. Given the reach I suspect a lot of folks will want a shorter stem.

Like others have said, Costco does not have a bike department. With that, you may be able to find mobile repair shops and local mechanics that will come to you and work on the bike in your driveway. I am not entirely surprised this bike falls under the 951 moniker but it would be nice to have Intense put out a bike with a little more customer service and input such as that provided by Fezzari, Ribble, or Canyon.

You can also actually purchase this from your local bike shop if they are an Intense dealer, thereby eliminating the need to pay extra to have it assembled all while helping your local shop do all the other things that bike shops do.

However, bike shops will sell at MSRP and not the COSTCO price. COSTCO will give you 2% on your purchase.

Any idea how much tire clearance it has?

Website states 700×45 max. Comes with 700x40s.

Taking into account the 2% ($50) return you’ll get on your executive COSTCO card, this bike costs $950 less than the equally spec’d Trek Checkpoint SL5. Makes me feel a bit silly, having recently purchased said Trek Checkpoint

Most shops don’t carry Intense or they dropped them. I suggest ride it a few months and return it back to Costco. If you like the sport, go to a bike shop, have it professionally tuned and built, you will save in the long run.

They have an a XL at my Costco right now for $1700, dropped from an initial offering of $2000. Way too big for me but the components look great. The small is sold out online. It sounds like the sizing is weird on this and the medium is like a 56.

True that the “M” is sized at 56 – just spoke with an Intense dealer today. Hard not to save the extra $550 buying from Costco. Money is money…
