Are you waiting on the return of the U.S.-made Schwinn Collegiate? You may have read recently that the Collegiate is being reborn as a limited edition bike to celebrate Schwinn’s 125th anniversary. They’re also being made in Detroit, Michigan by Detroit Bikes. And they’re available now… sort of.
Limited to just 500 bikes, the Collegiate is offered as a straight top tube or step-through frame. The straight top tube model will come in 18 and 20″ sizes, while the step-through version comes in 17 and 19″ sizes. Both feature a 4130 chromoly frame, metal fenders, 700c wheels and tires, and a simple but effective 1×8 Shimano Revo/Acera drivetrain.
The bikes are being sold exclusively on walmart.com for $998 each. While they first popped up for sale on Wednesday, they’re already listed as sold out. BUT, that’s just for the first 50 bikes. Schwinn tells us that the remaining 450 bikes will be released in waves of 50 at a time over the next six weeks. If you want one, there’s still a chance that if you sign up for in-stock alerts and act fast, you’ll get lucky in the coming weeks. Note that there are separate pages for the standard and step-through models.
